Then, the eyes should not be squinted to the right or left, not be blurred or wavering, not be excessively wide open, nor be closed. The mouth and eyes should be bright, and the doors of the senses should not be blocked. In terms of the body, relax, like unloading a burden from the shoulders, and abide comfortably. Comfort, relaxation, and lightness, these three, are the methods for relaxing the body through the four outer elements. In the 'Klong gsal,' it says: 'The body does not move, do it slowly; speech does not speak, remain in its own place; the mind does not scatter, relax in its natural state; the two eyes half-closed, gaze at the sky; the mouth slightly open, with a space between the teeth like a barleycorn can pass through. Through the three doors, the breath flows slowly, and after a moment, it dissipates outward.' Again, in the same, it says: 'The mind does not spread memories and thoughts, the two eyes gaze at the tip of the nose, and the nose also gazes at the tip of the mind, concentrate on one point, and remain calm.' When remaining calm like this, how should one examine the nature of the holder and the held? First, conduct a fundamental investigation: Like this, the maker of good and bad, joy and sorrow, the basis of all actions depends on the three doors. So, among the body, speech, and mind, which is the most important? Carefully examine the body's comfort and discomfort, cold and heat, hunger and satiety, the good and bad expressions of speech, and the mind's clinging to the five senses, the acceptance and rejection of good and bad, etc., examine from all aspects which is the most important. Furthermore, who is the one wandering in samsara and the one becoming a Buddha? Who is the basis of joy and sorrow and the one who negates and affirms? Experiencing the past and future, from the results of good and bad karma, separately experiencing joy and sorrow, do the body, speech, and mind each experience separately? Or do the three gather together and experience? Through thinking and examining, if it is determined that the root of everything is the mind, it is like recognizing a thief. In the 'Klong gsal,' it says: 'The one and only is the basis of all samsara and nirvana.' And in the 'G Sang ba snying po,' it says: 'The rootless nature of mind is the root of all phenomena.' And in the 'Doha,' it also says: 'Mind itself is the one seed of all, from which existence and transcendence of suffering arise.' Etc., what is said also refers to this meaning. Second, searching for characteristics: Like this, the root of all samsara and nirvana, the shape, color, and characteristics of this mind need to be examined. That is, round, square, and moon
