Furthermore, can the various parts, such as the head and limbs, be sought and found separately? If it is thought to arise from emptiness, is the place of arising established? If it is thought to arise from appearance, can it be clearly found? In short, examine the mind to be sought outwardly. Look inwardly at the mind of the seeker, and thoroughly investigate and repeat until the self-nature, which is free from all characteristics and identifications, is seen. Second, examine the place of dwelling: Does the nature of present awareness dwell in the outer container or the inner content? Or in which part of one's own body does it dwell? By which of shape, color, function, or nature is it represented? If, after examination and analysis, none of these are established, then look back at the knowing awareness. Although awareness is clear and apparent, repeat until it is thoroughly determined that its self-nature is not established, without foundation or root. Third, examine the place of going: This thought, like the wind, which seems to vanish as soon as it arises, where does it go? Does it go to the outer container or the inner content? Or to which of appearance and emptiness, existence and non-existence, etc.? After examination, there is no place to go. The nature of the mind that possesses a place is also free from all characteristics and identifications because it cannot be determined as "this." Therefore, there is neither a place to go nor a mind that goes. Therefore, repeat until it is thoroughly determined that awareness-emptiness is free from coming and going. Thus, there are three necessities for performing the preliminary practice of mind: common, excellent, and most excellent. First, it is to reverse the ordinary mind's clinging and to purify the mind's sins and pacify obstacles. Second, it is that the mind can no longer enter samsara, and the mind will be liberated as non-dual with the Dharmakaya. Third, it is to become non-dual with the minds of all Buddhas, so that the benefit of beings arises pervading space. As it says in the "Klong gsal": The preliminary practices of body, speech, and mind, know that there are three necessities: common, special, and ultimate. Just as it is said. Also, the necessities just mentioned, the first two are made common, and the last one is made excellent, and it is also explained as two. As it says in the "Thal 'gyur": There are two necessities for this, measured by the distinction of common and excellent. Just as it is said. Keeping such excellent and common necessities in mind, one should thoroughly and persistently examine the three: arising place, dwelling place, and going place.

Having heard that if one asks with compassion from those who have sentient beings, it will be given. Then (the king) discussed going together with a merchant who had taken jewels from the outer sea many times. Although the ministers pleaded with him not to go, the king did not listen and set sail on a ship with a retinue of five hundred merchants. After a few days, they arrived at a treasure island covered with various jewel powders. There, the king and the merchant left their entourage and traveled in a small boat for a few days. After passing silver mountains and lapis lazuli mountains, they saw a yellow patch and asked what it was. They were told that it was a gold mountain, the place where they should dig. They continued on and reached the ground at the foot of the mountain covered with gold sand. The merchant said that on top of the mountain there was a pavilion built of seven precious jewels. At the door of the pavilion there is a vajra pestle, use it to knock on the door and ask for jewels for the benefit of sentient beings. He instructed the king to give the signal and then remain silent. Eight dragon girls would come to offer jewels, and he should not say anything to them. After that, a beautiful dragon girl would come to offer jewels, at that time he should quickly get up, wrap the jewel in his clothes, place it on the crown of his head, and leave. The merchant gave careful instructions and then left. Just as the merchant had said, a dragon girl named "Beautiful Face," wearing blue clothes, extremely beautiful, and never tiring to look at, came out and offered the jewel from the top of her head. The king took the jewel and quickly returned, and together with the merchant returned to the island where his entourage was, and then turned the boat around. On one of the islands, they saw a beautiful lotus tree on which there was a boy adorned with auspicious signs and marks. The king went to the boy and asked: Boy, what is your father and lineage? What is your name? What is your dwelling place and food? What are you doing here? The boy replied: Father is self-aware Samantabhadra, mother is Dharmadhatu Samantabhadri. Lineage is emptiness and wisdom without duality. Name is Padmasambhava Glorious. Dwelling place is Dharmadhatu unborn. Food is dualistic appearance and conceptual thought. I perform the deeds of the Buddhas of the three times.
