From the Jataka tales: Hearing is a lamp that dispels the darkness of ignorance. It is the supreme wealth that cannot be stolen by thieves, etc. It is a weapon that destroys the enemy of all ignorance. It is the supreme friend who shows the methods and instructions. Meeting with virtuous people is the supreme birth. In the assembly, the wise will rejoice. Refuting the arguments of opponents is like the light of the sun. It dispels the pride and curses of the guides. Thus it is said. Again, in the same text: Because of being gentle and very clear, confidence arises. Great fame will arise immediately. It becomes a special cause for fluent and eloquent speech. Through hearing, glory becomes familiar and the meaning is clearly understood. Having hearing, there is no contradiction. One will be well established on the path of the three trainings. Thus it is said. Likewise, the benefits of listening with one-pointed attention are: From the Pramanavarttika: By what faith does one listen, the merit of heavenly joy, and by what the seed of wisdom that attains nirvana will sprout. Thus it is said. Again, in the same text, the Blessed One spoke of five benefits of listening to the Dharma: All that has not been heard will be heard, what has been heard will be completely purified, doubt will be abandoned, right view will be generated, and the deep meaning of words and meaning will be understood by wisdom. Thus it is said. Similarly, the benefits of the Dharma speaker also speaking the Dharma are threefold: It becomes the supreme offering to the Buddhas, it becomes the supreme giving to sentient beings, and merit increases and clairvoyance is attained. Among these, the supreme offering is: From the Sutra: For whose benefit do I teach the Dharma properly, this will become the supreme offering. Flowers, perfumes, and lamps are not the true offerings to the Buddhas. Thus it is said. The supreme giving is: From the Maitreya-simhanada Sutra: If someone fills Buddha-fields as numerous as the sands of the Ganges with the seven precious jewels and offers them to the Buddhas with great joy, and another gives a single verse to one sentient being, the giving of jewels, although very vast, cannot be compared to the giving of a verse with compassion, not even by a hundredth part, let alone two or three verses. Therefore, it is also said that merit increases and immeasurable clairvoyance is attained. As it is said in the Sikshasamuccaya: The giving of Dharma is without material defilement.

It is said that it is the cause of increasing merit. As it is said in the "Lion's Roar Question Sutra": "The giving of Dharma enables one to remember past lives." And as it is said in the "Dragon King Ocean Question Sutra": "The giving of Dharma transforms into the clear knowledge of the exhaustion of defilements." It is said that listening to and keeping in mind these teachings has immeasurable benefits. As it is said in the "Wisdom Ocean Question Sutra": "Those who uphold the sacred Dharma of the Tathagata will become hundreds of thousands of Brahma and protectors of the world, will become wheel-turning kings and kings among men, will attain happiness and mental happiness, and will awaken to Buddhahood there." Furthermore, there are three ways of teaching and listening: first, the way the Buddha teaches the Dharma; second, the way the Arhat teaches the Dharma; and third, the way the Pandit teaches the Dharma. First, the way the Buddha teaches the Dharma is: He turns the wheel of Dharma by relying on three kinds of miracles. That is, with the miracle of神通 (Tibetan: རྫུ་འཕྲུལ་, Sanskrit: *ṛddhi*, Romanization: riddhi, meaning: magical power), he emits light, and rises to the height of seven Tala trees, etc., showing immeasurable miracles of body, making the beings to be tamed have faith and desire. With the miracle of universal expression, he fully knows the faculties, thoughts, and habits of the beings to be tamed, and considering teaching the Dharma that corresponds to this, he blesses the continuum of the retinue, which is the miracle of mind, making the continuum pure and capable. With the miracle of subsequent instruction, he rains down the rain of Dharma according to the wishes of the beings to be tamed, thereby connecting beings with the states of higher realms and definite goodness. This is considered the most excellent of all miracles. As it is said in the *Abhidharmakośa*: "Among all miracles, teaching is the best, because it is not deceptive, because it is consistent, and because it connects with the desirable result." The reason for the three miracles is: with神通 (Tibetan: རྫུ་འཕྲུལ་, Sanskrit: *ṛddhi*, Romanization: riddhi, meaning: magical power), he tames the beings to be tamed and those who create obstacles, because those who do not have faith are not vessels of the Dharma. As it is said in the *Bodhicaryāvatāra*: "Do not teach the Dharma to those who are disrespectful, do not wag your head in front of the sick, nor to those who carry umbrellas, staffs, or weapons, nor to those who have their heads wrapped." With universal expression, he makes the mind capable and knows the individual faculties. With subsequent instruction, he teaches according to their wishes and capacities, if not so
