Faith is defined as having great joy in the Lama and the Three Jewels, and being willing to enter into those realms. That is, being willing to rely on the Lama, being willing to practice the Buddha, being willing to see the Dharma as the path, and being willing to see the Sangha as companions. For example, entering (these realms) like a child following its mother. The sign of it arising in one's mindstream is that merely seeing, hearing, or remembering the Lama and the Three Jewels, who place one on the path to liberation, causes one's heart to ache and one's mouth to pray. The benefit of this is stated in the Sutra of the Lamp of the Three Jewels: "Having faith in the Buddhas and the Dharma, having faith in the conduct of the Buddha's sons, having faith in unsurpassed Bodhi, then the mind of a great being will arise." Also, in the Secret Inconceivable Sutra, it says: "Having faith, one will not lose the opportunity to see the Buddha, hear the Dharma, and serve the Sangha, and wherever one is born, one will not be separated from these." Reverential faith is defined as: relying on joy, being mindful and not transgressing asceticism, and having reverence for superiors with body, speech, and mind, therefore it is reverential faith. That is, physical reverence, engaging in disciplined conduct such as prostrations and circumambulations; verbal reverence, offering praise and using respectful language; mental reverence, seeing them as worthy of offerings and bowing one's head, these are the three. For example, striving with gentleness, like subjects respecting a king. The sign of it arising in one's mindstream is: in the presence of superiors, there is no arrogance or haughty demeanor. The benefit is stated in the Lamp of the Three Jewels: "Abandoning arrogance, with reverence as the root, like gathering virtuous roots with the hand of faith." Also, in the Lamp of the Three Jewels, it says: "Diligently engaging in mindfulness, one guards the doors of the senses, tames one's own mind, and also protects the minds of others." Thus, having both faith and mindfulness, when constantly focused on the Dharma, one will not fall into the lower realms in the future, therefore one is fearless. So it is said. Pure faith is defined as having joy in the qualities of the superior objects, and abiding in a clear and joyful state without the stain of deceit. That is, having joy in the virtue of conventional appearances, having purity in the virtue of ultimate wisdom, and having pure faith in the virtue of union and equality. For example,

Just as clear water clears muddy water, it purifies the mind's misdeeds. Its sign is that the three doors of body, speech, and mind do not mix with sin, but are happy to engage in virtuous deeds. The benefits are: From the Jewel Lamp Sutra: "Faith generates great joy in the Victorious One's Dharma. Faith is a symbol of a city of well-being and happiness. Faith makes qualities and wisdom pervasive." Confident faith is: having no doubt about the dharmas of the ground, path, and fruition, and knowing that the words and meanings of the scriptures and reasoning that explain their meaning are not deceptive, and then entering into them, this is confident faith. That is, having faith that the causes and effects of samsara are to be abandoned, having faith that the causes and effects of nirvana are to be adopted, and having faith that the unspecified is unnecessary. For example, just as one engages in agriculture with confidence in the autumn harvest, one enters into virtue. As a sign that it has arisen in one's mindstream, one gains a definite understanding of having faith in the teacher Buddha, the teachings of the Dharma, the great and small vehicles, and the two assemblies of the Sangha, along with their supports. The benefits are: From the Jewel Lamp Sutra: "Faith makes the senses sharp and clear. With the power of faith, one is not deceived by others, and it is the basis for eliminating afflictions." And from the Bodhisattva Pitaka: "Faith is wanting to hear the sacred Dharma, having faith in karma and its maturation, and relying on it and being pleased by it." So it is. The faith of definitely contemplating the profound Dharma is: wanting the meaning of the definitive truth of dharmata, abiding in its nature after seeing its meaning, and hearing, contemplating, and meditating on the scriptures that explain the meaning, there are three faiths of definitely contemplating. For example, just as one cherishes finding gold in earth and stones, one cherishes the true meaning. Its sign is that one cannot bear to be separated from practice day and night. The benefits are: From the Jewel Lamp Sutra: "Faith enables one to attain Buddhahood." And from the Moon Essence Sutra: "The faith of definitely contemplating the Three Jewels is like a wish-fulfilling jewel." So it is. Explaining the nature of one who has faith: From the Treasury of Wish-Fulfilling Jewels: "The nature of faith is like good earth, it is the basis of all dharmas, and it increases the accumulation of merit. Faith is like a boat, it ferries one across the ocean of existence."
