The nature of the teacher, the nature of the listener-disciple, and the nature of common practice. First, the expounder-teacher, as stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: "A spiritual friend is disciplined, peaceful, extremely peaceful, superior in qualities, diligent, rich in scriptures, realizes reality, is skilled in speaking, possesses love, and is relied upon having abandoned weariness." Thus, one whose body, speech, and mind are peaceful and well-tamed, whose qualities and diligence are great, who is very learned, especially skilled in the place of scriptures, skilled in showing the profound meaning, whose compassion is great, and who can endure the difficulties of teaching the Dharma, is such a one. Second, the listener-disciple, who respects the Dharma and the guru, and has a special desire to pursue meaning, is therefore able to practice the Dharma. As the Venerable Shakya Light said: "Respect for the guru, pure morality, meditation, and constant diligence in recitation, being strict, gentle, and endowed with patience, abiding in vows, is said to be endowed with Dharma." As it is said, a disciple with these characteristics is also not tainted by the faults and impurities of the vessel, generates joy, respect, and faith, abandons obscurations such as sleep and drowsiness, and afflictions such as pride, transcends the defiled mind of this life, and focuses only on liberation. For the benefit of sentient beings, after I hear this Dharma, I will benefit my own mind-stream. Thus, by generating a strong intention and desire, listening purely transforms hearing into stainless glory. This is very important, because entering the path of Dharma requires starting with hearing and not making mistakes. Furthermore, as stated in the Sutra of the Collection of Noble Qualities: "Joy, respect, and supreme faith are established, removing obscurations and afflictions, transcending defilement, entering into supreme wisdom for the benefit of beings, listen to this practice of the brave ones." As it is said. Third, the common practice is to attain enlightenment for the benefit of all sentient beings. For this purpose, generate the intention to strive for the teaching and learning of the Dharma, visualize the teacher as the lord of all lineages and mandalas, the all-pervading primordial protector Samantabhadra, and visualize the disciple as Manjushri or Tara.
