Faith arises from a wonderful object of reliance. Initial faith comes from the reliance and stories of supreme places. Conviction-based faith arises from hearing about cause and effect. Faith in the Dharma, in its profound aspects, comes from hearing. Having arisen from these, one focuses on the nature of those places and then engages in them. From the Bodhisattva Pitaka: "Having faith" means having great faith in a superior object, which is relying on a virtuous friend, wanting to see the noble ones, wanting to hear the sacred Dharma, having faith in actions and their consequences, and knowing that Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Shravakas are virtuous friends, and relying on them with faith and pleasing them. Thus it is said. The causes for increasing faith are: relying on a holy Lama and generating devotion from the heart, which increases faith; a special friend who blends Dharma and one's own mindstream, which increases faith; reading profound Sutras and Tantras, which increases faith; contemplating the certainty of death and impermanence, which increases faith; seeing and hearing stories of karma and its effects, which increases faith; engaging in deeper meditation practice for longer periods than before, which increases faith; and from secret, inconceivable sources, not engaging in sinful actions and doing deeds praised by the noble ones, which increases faith. Thus it is said. Therefore, one must increase it daily through all or each of these means. Abandoning the faults that diminish faith: when a demon enters oneself, as a sign of being blessed, one finds fault with the Lama, the virtuous friend; one finds fault with the general bad qualities of Dharma practitioners; one associates with ordinary friends; one's diligence in practice decreases; one indulges in sense pleasures at will; and one lacks reverence for the Three Jewels. The methods to counteract these are: contemplate the qualities of the Lama, the Three Jewels, and one's Dharma friends, and generate pure perception and reverence for all Dharma practitioners. Seeing evil in others is a sign of one's own impurity, like holding a yellow conch shell, so advise oneself. Do not associate with ordinary people. Remember the faults of sense pleasures. One should recognize those faults that diminish faith as demons. From the Mother (Prajnaparamita): "The evil demon comes before those who are just beginning their practice and even reverses their faith, and also turns back the conduct of Bodhisattvas." Thus it is said.

To advise on continuously connecting the mind to the causes of generating faith: Seeing birth, death, transition, and change is a cause for generating faith, so count the deaths of others and generate faith. When illness, evil spirits, and obstacles occur, it is a cause for generating faith, so recognize it as the encouragement of a virtuous teacher and generate faith. When the suffering of adverse conditions occurs, it is a cause for generating faith, so recognize it as the guidance of enlightenment and generate faith. When hearing the biographies of previous masters, it is a cause for generating faith, so practice diligently in the Dharma and generate faith. When hearing of the great deeds of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, such as the Sutra Pitaka and Jataka tales, faith arises. Therefore, focus on the Great Vehicle of Enlightenment and generate faith. Moreover, it is important to generate faith every day through all or any one of these means. Therefore, it is important not to be careless in anything, but to cherish it. The signs of having generated faith in this way are: being disillusioned with the illusions of samsara, like a person with vomiting sickness seeing food; having a fervent devotion to the Lama and the Three Jewels, like a young child clinging to its mother; being diligent in listening and contemplating, like a thirsty person longing for water; cherishing and protecting the precepts, like a poor person finding gold and jewels; being enthusiastic about virtuous practice and cultivation, like a merchant going to the Golden Island; having faith in all vehicles, like a desirous person going to the market. If these occur, it is a sign that faith has arisen, so it is important to continuously increase it. At that time, because one's own mindstream is tamed by the Dharma, one should strive to find ways to generate faith without confusing the Dharma and the individual. Moreover, without faith, even if there are many other qualities, they are useless, like being beautiful but without eyes, so generate faith. Moreover, because time is fleeting, think of all the qualities of the Dharma, the Lama, Dharma friends, and the Buddha as being utterly amazing, and cultivate faith without high or low status or sectarian bias, and cherish taming one's own mindstream. Among these, even if there is faith, there are six reasons why it does not become true faith: Some beginners seem to have great faith when they are with the Lama, but have no faith after leaving the Lama; some people generate faith quickly when they encounter circumstances, but have no faith after leaving the circumstances; some people only practice the Dharma they like, or have faith only until the troubles of illness and evil spirits are not resolved,
