The suffering of pretas is also similar. The "Letter to a Friend" states: Even in the animal realm, one experiences various sufferings such as being killed, bound, and beaten. For those who abandon peace and virtue, there arises the unbearable situation of eating each other. Some are killed for the sake of pearls, wool, bones, blood, meat, and skin. Others, helpless, are struck and exploited with feet, hands, iron, and iron hooks. So it is said. Regarding lifespan: The lifespan of animals, the extremely long-lived can survive for a kalpa, while the short-lived are uncertain. Thinking about the suffering of the lower realms in this way, even enduring the pain of putting a finger in fire for a day, or staying naked in an ice cave in winter, or going without food and drink for days and nights, or being bitten by mosquitoes and lice on the body, is difficult to bear. How then can one endure the suffering of hell beings, pretas, and animals? By comparing it to one's own current experience, one should be motivated by fear to generate strong renunciation and aversion, thereby making this precious human life meaningful. Now, regarding the beings of the three higher realms: Through accumulating virtuous actions corresponding to each, namely small, medium, and great virtuous deeds, one is born successively as a human, a desire realm god, and a god of the higher realms, and enjoys the happiness of those respective states. Therefore, thinking that there is no opportunity for happiness in the lower realms, one should strive to attain the higher realms. However, the nature of all of samsara is suffering, and it is without essence. Not only are the lower realms so painful, but the nature of the higher realms is also suffering. Among them are the suffering of humans, the suffering of asuras (demigods), and the suffering of gods. First, the suffering of humans: In general, at the time of birth, the mother's womb is narrow, dark, and foul-smelling, and it is difficult to endure the changes of hot and cold. One must stay there for months. Then, the head and feet are reversed, like being pulled out from the eyeball. The sensation of touch is like being whipped with thorns. The feeling of being held in the hand is like a small bird being caught by an eagle, and there is such suffering. Then, at the time of aging, the color fades, the body loses its luster and becomes unsightly, bluish-black and ashen, the hair turns white, the sensory faculties decline, the form is damaged, the teeth fall out, the body becomes hunched, the limbs become crooked, the muscles atrophy, the skin loosens, and the face is filled with wrinkles.

śreṣṭha-lā yid-kyi duḥ-ṅal-te (梵文罗马拟音)。 sāmānyebhyo śarīreṇa (梵文罗马拟音)。

After aging, it is difficult to stand up, walking is wobbly, sitting is unsteady, and speech becomes mumbled. The senses decline, vision becomes blurred, and hearing diminishes. Enjoyment wanes, with too little food leading to hunger and too much causing indigestion, rendering one incapable of enjoying desirable objects and making everything unpleasant. Furthermore, due to past karma and sudden circumstances, the four elements become imbalanced, causing illness to arise, leading to unbearable pain and a weakened body, depriving one of the ability to freely enjoy food, drink, and sleep. One is forced to rely on unwanted medicines and treatments, enduring endless suffering from the fear of death. At the time of death, no amount of medical treatment or rituals can help, and one must abandon all the wealth, power, retinue, and friends that were previously acquired through effort, even leaving behind the cherished body, and dying with the intense suffering of the final breath. These four sufferings are not only universally experienced by people, but also, in the intervals when these four sufferings are relatively mild, for the sake of pursuing meager worldly happiness such as wealth and status, one sacrifices life and limb, enduring countless hardships, yet failing to achieve desired goals; the suffering of encountering undesirable conditions such as cold, heat, hunger, thirst, disease, evil spirits, enemies, and thieves; the suffering of separation from relatives, friends, retinue, wealth, joy, and happiness. In short, the more retinue and wealth the rich possess, the greater the suffering of protecting them; while the poor and others, even if they try to find the necessary food and clothing, cannot obtain them, and are thus filled with the suffering of poverty. As stated in the Jataka tales: "One is the torment of guarding, and the other is the toil of seeking. Whether rich or poor, neither will find happiness." The Four Hundred Verses also states: " श्रेष्ठལ་ཡིད་ཀྱི་སྡུག་བསྔལ་ཏེ། (Tibetan). (Sanskrit Devanagari). śreṣṭha-lā yid-kyi duḥ-ṅal-te (Sanskrit Romanization). The best have mental suffering (Literal Chinese meaning). (Sanskrit Devanagari). sāmānyebhyo śarīreṇa (Sanskrit Romanization). The ordinary have it with the body (Literal Chinese meaning)." As the scriptures say, what we have personally experienced can be summarized by the above. Second, the suffering of the Asuras (demigods). First, when they see the perfect wealth of the gods, they are constantly filled with unbearable and intense suffering due to jealousy. They frequently fight with the gods, and because the Asuras have less merit and power, they are often killed.
