Turning inside out, connected by the minute forms of water veins, it cracks like an উৎপལ་ (Tibetan, Sanskrit Devanagari, utpala, meaning: blue lotus). Or it splits into sixteen, thirty-two, or hundreds and thousands of pieces, cracking like a great lotus. The lifespan of these is: If one grinds sesame seeds that can fill a hundred khals, and takes out one sesame seed every hundred years until the ground sesame is used up, the lifespan of the Blister Hell will be twenty times longer. Just like that: If one grinds sesame seeds from கோசலை (Tibetan, Sanskrit Devanagari, kosala, meaning: Kosala) that can fill a hundred khals, and throws away one sesame seed every hundred years until the ground sesame is used up, that is the lifespan of the Blister Hell. It is said to be twenty times longer. As stated in the Treasury of Knowledge: From the ground sesame, every hundred years, one sesame seed is taken out until it is used up, that is the lifespan of the Blister Hell. The lifespan of other hells is twenty times that. So it is said. Then, the suffering of the second place of the evil realms, the Pretas, is: Mostly located five hundred yojanas below this Jambudvipa. The scattered Pretas are like those spread throughout the entire earth, mountains, and rivers. Regarding this, the Mindfulness Sutra speaks of six types of Pretas, but if summarized, there are three types: Pretas with external obscurations, Pretas with internal obscurations, and Pretas with obscurations of food and drink. Pretas with external obscurations are: Afflicted by hunger and thirst, their bodies are dry and emaciated, their throats and limbs are thin, and their hair is tangled. They run around everywhere in search of food and drink, but cannot find any. Even if they see piles of food, rivers, and fruit-bearing trees from afar, when they arrive there, the food disappears without a trace. The rivers dry up or turn into pus and blood. The trees and fruit trees are seen as dry stumps without fruit. Even if this does not happen, there are many people holding weapons who block and guard them, and so on, causing suffering. Pretas with internal obscurations are: Some have mouths as small as the eye of a needle, but their stomachs are as big as mountains, and they are afflicted by hunger. Even a little bit of discarded impurity, they do not have the power to seek. As the sutra says: Even if they find food and drink, it cannot enter their mouths. Even if it enters their mouths, the food slips and remains in their cheeks. The drinks are dried up by the poison in their mouths, and even if a little bit enters, it cannot pass through their throats. Even if it passes through their throats, their stomachs cannot be filled, and so on, causing suffering because they cannot eat or drink. Pretas with obscurations of food and drink are: Even the food and drink that enters their stomachs turns into burning flames, burning their internal organs, etc.,

The so-called "swallowing fluids" refers to consuming impure and foul-smelling things such as feces, urine, pus, blood, phlegm, and mucus, as well as harmful things like poison and ashes, which only bring suffering. All of these, in general, always involve unbearable suffering from hunger and thirst, being scorched by heat without clothes, being frozen by cold, feeling hot even in the spring moon, feeling cold even in the winter sun, clouds raining fire in summer, always being exhausted from searching for food, being weakened to the point of emaciation, becoming enemies with each other, suffering the fear of being bound, beaten, and killed, and enduring intense and prolonged suffering from inescapable great fear and hunger. Regarding the differences in lifespan, the Kosha states, "Five hundred months and days," which refers to five hundred years calculated with one day for every month in the human realm. In the Suhrllekha, it says, "Five thousand and ten million kotis also do not die." It is said that some pretas have a lifespan of five thousand years, while others have ten thousand years. The cause of such suffering is stinginess and obstruction, so one must be cautious and careful. Next, consider the suffering of the third realm of evil destinies, the animals. These are divided into two types: general and scattered. The general ones live in the great ocean, without a refuge or place of protection, driven by the waves and wandering aimlessly. They devour each other, the large swallowing the small, and the small burrowing into the bodies of the large to devour them. The nagas are burned daily by gravel and devoured by garudas, and so on, always suffering from the fear of enemies appearing, which is unbearable. The scattered ones exist in human realms. Those not owned by humans are always tormented by the fear of enemies appearing, without any happiness, and are eaten by birds and beasts. They are involuntarily killed by humans, and those who are owned have their fur plucked, their noses pierced, are beaten and driven, are tormented by heavy burdens, are killed for their meat, blood, skin, and bones, are foolish and deluded, do not know what to accept and reject, and are confused, suffering pain. Furthermore, there is hunger, thirst, heat, cold, fatigue, and so on, similar to hell.
