Therefore, there are four residing around each of the four directions, called the sixteen neighboring ones. Suffering for half a middle kalpa, this is said in the Sutra of Mindfulness. The temporary places and forms are not fixed; in the ocean, mountains, trees, space, houses, rocks, and so on, there are various forms of living beings. They experience suffering by using stones, wood, brooms, utensils, dung, fences, and so on. The lifespans of those hells are as stated in the Wish-Fulfilling Jewel Treasury: The lifespans of the six, starting with Revival, are equal to the days and nights of the desire gods; they can live for that many of their own years. The Extremely Hot Hell can live for half a middle kalpa, and the Uninterrupted Hell stays for one middle kalpa. As it is said. According to the order mentioned earlier, the lifespans of the six desire gods, adding up those years one by one, one day of the six hells, starting with Revival, is counted as their own year, and they can live for that long. For example, the five hundred years of the Four Great Kings is counted as one day of the Revival Hell, and they can live for five hundred years. The Thirty-Three (Trayastrimsa) live for a thousand years, the Yama live for two thousand years, the Tushita live for four thousand years, the Nirmanarati live for eight thousand years, and the Paranirmitavasavartin live for sixteen thousand years. The Extremely Hot Hell can live for half a middle kalpa, and the Uninterrupted Hell can live for one middle kalpa. The eight who are bound by snow and snowstorms, residing in extremely cold places in the snow, are: those with cold blisters the size of a thumb are those with blisters. Those whose blisters burst and become wounds are those with burst blisters. Those who say "Achu" are those who say "Achu." Those who can only make the sound "Kyéhud" are those who say "Kyéhud."
