Practicing Dharma out of attachment to fame, gain, and respect, being jealous and stingy towards others' wealth, not contemplating the virtues of the speaker but seeking faults, believing in and relying on evil teachers, seeking intellectual arguments but not seeking the merits of the Dharma. The six actions that deviate from the Mahayana are: not seeking the treasury of Bodhisattvas but seeking the magic of non-Buddhists; engaging in worldly gossip and not seeking extensive learning; seeking verbal learning but not seeking liberation; wanting to be proficient in various fields of knowledge but not seeking virtuous friends. Therefore, one should abandon these three faults, six stains, and thirty-six transgressions, and learn to listen to the Dharma through possessing excellent qualities. The Dharma to be listened to is that one must understand that samsara is by nature suffering. As mentioned above, the leisure and endowment of human life are difficult to obtain and easy to perish, and one cannot escape death. Not only death, but also the results of one's own good and bad deeds will ripen into the two paths of happiness and suffering. As it is said in the Vinaya Sutra: "Actions, even after hundreds of kalpas, will not be wasted or lost. When the causes and conditions meet, the results will be experienced by the embodied beings themselves." Just as planting wheat will not produce barley, and planting barley will not turn into wheat, the results of good deeds are birth in the happy realms, and the results of bad deeds are birth in the lower realms, revolving like a water bucket, experiencing various kinds of karma and suffering the consequences. Therefore, the nature of suffering is endless. The Omniscient Dharma Lord said: "Thus, the impermanent Dharma of the three realms of samsara, due to its change, is extremely painful. The three of suffering, change, and conditioned existence, all beings in the six realms are pitiable." And in the Sutra of Advice to the King, it is said: "Great King, this existence is change, this existence is impermanent, this existence is suffering." That is, the suffering of suffering, the suffering of change, and the suffering of conditioned existence torment these six kinds of beings and drown them in the ocean of suffering.

It is like this. That is to say, the suffering of sentient beings is such that before the previous suffering has subsided, the next one overwhelms them, and there is no end to it, it is immeasurable and limitless. As it says in the "Precious Garland": "Just as the sky in all directions, and the earth, water, fire, and wind are limitless, so too, the suffering of sentient beings is considered limitless." And: "Even short-lived suffering is hard to bear, what need is there to mention long-lasting suffering?" Also, as it says in the "Distinction of Actions": "The suffering of existence is like a pit of fire, without any chance of coolness. It is frightening and terrifying, like living among wild beasts. It is full of harm, like living among barbarians. The opportunity for liberation is difficult, like a dark room in a royal palace. It occurs again and again, like the waves of the ocean. It destroys the life of happy migrations, like the poison hala." So it is said. Furthermore, due to being ignorant of what to accept and reject, without distinguishing between cause and effect, one desires to attain happiness, but does not engage in the virtuous deeds that are the cause of happiness. One desires to abandon suffering, but diligently engages in the non-virtuous causes of suffering. The cause of suffering is mainly the five poisons or three poisons of the afflictions, therefore one runs and acts according to the nature of accumulation. Although one experiences the result of that, the nature of suffering in various forms, one still does not know fear and accepts it, like a thief who has had his hand cut off and then steals again, thus incurring the punishment of having his head cut off. As it says in the "Entering the Bodhisattva's Way": "Although one has the intention to eliminate suffering, one runs directly into suffering. Although one desires happiness, due to delusion, one destroys one's own happiness like an enemy." How does one destroy it? Due to attachment and clinging to the five objects of desire, the power of the afflictions increases and one enters into suffering, like a moth that goes towards the light of a lamp desiring its form and gets burned, a wild animal that is killed by listening to the sound of a flute, a bee that gets stuck or dies with its mouth closed while sucking nectar from a flower, fish that are deceived and killed by the taste of food on the tip of a fisherman's hook, and an elephant that enters a lake desiring the cool touch and drowns. In the song of the Doha Treasury it says: "All sentient beings are deceived by the seal of existence." Alas, foolishness!

They said, joining their arrows: Look upon (these things) as you would fish, butterflies, elephants, bees, and deer here. Thus it is said. From these five objects, afflictions arise, and due to this, wandering endlessly in samsara, it is said to be more terrifying than poison. As it is said in the "Letter to a Disciple": Objects and poison are similar, pleasant only at the first taste; objects and poison are similar, their ripening is harsh and unbearable; objects and poison are similar, they obscure with the darkness of delusion; objects and poison are similar, difficult to reverse and unsteady. If objects and poison are examined with certainty by the mind, then poison is easier to deal with, the unbearable nature is that of objects. Poison only becomes poison in one lifetime; objects become poison in other lifetimes as well. Poison, when mixed with poison, is completely pacified; it can be cured with supreme secret mantras and antidote medicines. Poison, when used skillfully, can benefit people; but the great poison of objects is never like that. Thus, these beings revolve among each other and suffer. In the "Great Perfection, Resting the Mind Itself," it says: Gods and demigods, hell beings, hungry ghosts, humans, animals, the six realms are like the turning of a water wheel, from one to another, suffering is endless. And, in the "Garland of Jewels," it says: The three paths, without beginning, end, or middle, the mandala of samsara, like a wheel of fire turning backwards, by the power of cause and condition, one revolves in samsara. Thus, in samsara, even in a lifetime in samsara, due to the combination of relatives, enemies, and neutral parties, there is an infinite number of joys and sorrows, benefits and harms, so that relatives become enemies, and enemies become friends, and so on, which is inconceivable. As stated by the Venerable Vimalamitra: When lifetimes are counted, each sentient being also carries the burden of friends, enemies, and neutrals, giving joys and sorrows, benefits and harms, the number is endless. Father becomes mother, mother becomes sister, and that becomes son, there is no certainty, and there is no end to friends becoming enemies. And, in the "Friendly Epistle," it says: From desire for possessions, poverty and death, and sickness and old age, and the many sufferings, be disgusted with samsara, the source of arising. Knowing its faults, please listen. Father is son, mother is wife, beings who were enemies are also spiritual friends, there is also the reverse.
