The complete protections are the five: killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying, and drinking alcohol. The protection of guarding some is: vowing to guard whichever of those roots one is happy to guard. The protections of a novice monk are: the ten abstentions, etc. The protections of a nun are three hundred and sixty precepts. The protections of a monk are two hundred and fifty-three precepts. The protections of a lay practitioner are the eight precepts. The protections of a śikṣamāṇā are twenty-two precepts. In short, whatever one has vowed to keep, one must guard it like the eye on one's forehead and the heart in one's chest. As it says in the Samadhiraja Sutra: "If one is full of hearing but does not guard morality, one will go to a bad rebirth because of the loss of morality. Much hearing will not be able to save one." If one thinks that morality alone is enough and that hearing is not necessary, that is not so. Again, it says in the same text: "If one is arrogant with morality and is full of it, and does not strive to hear much, the fruit of morality will be completely exhausted, and in the future one will experience the suffering of bad rebirths." Therefore, the external pratimokṣa vows should be practiced as they appear in the Vinaya-vastu and the Vinaya-uttaragrantha, etc. Furthermore, if we summarize these, the sutra says: "Do no evil, practice all good, subdue your own mind, this is the teaching of the Buddhas." "Good is the protection of the body, good is the protection of speech, good is the protection of the mind, good is protection in all places, the monk who protects all, he is liberated from all suffering." As it is said. And in the Kṣitigarbha-cakra-daśa-sūtra it says: "If one guards the four roots of the naturally sinful, then that is the supreme cause of all virtuous dharmas, both with and without outflows, which is established. Therefore, guarding the four dharmas is called the root of all virtuous dharmas. Just as, relying on this great earth, plants, flowers, trees, and forests, etc., grow. Similarly, relying on guarding these four roots of morality, all virtuous dharmas increase and arise." As it is said.

The benefits of guarding the four root vows are such that there are limitless benefits to guarding the two hundred and fifty-three precepts. The foundation for achieving liberation and the state of omniscience is solely the discipline of morality, so it is appropriate to strive. The precepts of the inner Bodhisattva are as in the previous chapter on Bodhisattvas. Here, to summarize, it is said in Maitreya's Engaging in the Bodhisattva's Deeds: "Whoever fills the three thousand worlds with jewels, and offers them to those with the ten powers, the merit of aspiring to enlightenment will increase exceedingly. Whoever fills fields as numerous as the sands of the Ganges with jewels and gives them away, the merit of maturing into supreme enlightenment will increase exceedingly." Thus it is said. Judging from the benefits of aspiring to enlightenment, we ourselves should also practice the Dharma of the Great Vehicle with pure intention, cherishing others more than ourselves, and generate the vast mind to liberate all mother sentient beings from the great ocean of suffering in samsara, taking on difficulties and never abandoning the strong vow. In the Tantra of the Great Empowerment, the Boundless Ocean, it says: "Giving away life, guarding celibacy, and also teaching the Dharma, always rely on mindfulness. When benefiting others, also show discernment." Furthermore, the special cause for becoming a son of the Buddhas and for attaining perfect enlightenment depends on generating the supreme mind of enlightenment. The key point is stated in the Sutra: "Those who wish to quickly attain perfect enlightenment should not study many teachings, but should study one. What is that one? It is the mind of enlightenment." Thus it is said. Again, in Engaging in the Bodhisattva's Deeds, it says: "Once the mind of enlightenment is born, in an instant, those wretched ones trapped in the prison of samsara are called sons of the Sugatas, and are bowed down to by the world with its gods and humans." Thus it is said. Among the sacred Dharmas, the main cause for liberating oneself and others from suffering and attaining the sacred happiness of temporary and ultimate benefit is the mind of enlightenment. In the Compendium of Trainings, it says: "Wanting to completely end suffering, and also to go to the end of happiness,
