arise. Renunciation and sorrow arise, and the mind becomes narrow. Thus it is said. By contemplating impermanence day and night, seeing that all appearances will perish, therefore, from the depths of one's heart, the mind of not being attached to external objects arises, the mind of diligently practicing virtue like a burning fire arises, from the depths of one's heart, an extraordinary fear of the suffering of samsara arises, knowing that at the time of death one will surely be empty and abandoning the affairs of this life, not spending even a moment in ordinary leisure, but using the three doors of body, speech, and mind for the Dharma, seeing the ripening of karmic results and giving rise to renunciation and sorrow, knowing that death is uncertain at any time and not attaching to anything, these are the degrees of familiarizing oneself with impermanence from the depths of one's heart. The benefits of meditating in this way are immeasurable. In the Vinaya Pitaka, it is said: Giving alms to a hundred monks with wealth is not as good as thinking for a moment about the impermanence of conditioned phenomena. Thus it is said. In the Nirvana Sutra, it is also said: Among the cultivated fields, the autumn harvest is the most excellent; among all footprints, the footprints of the king of cattle are the most excellent; among all thoughts, the thoughts of impermanence and death are the most excellent. This can reverse all the thoughts of the three realms. Thus it is said. The Omniscient Longchenpa also said: Its benefits are extremely vast, naturally abandoning the faults of samsara and possessing qualities. Liberated from the clinging to permanence, pacifying the attachment and aversion of enemies and friends. Extremely diligent in virtue, knowing this life to be illusory. Perfectly completing the two accumulations, renowned and seen by the gods. Happily spending one's life, going to the heavens. Quickly attaining the state of immortal nectar. Thus it is said. In short, no matter how perfect the wealth of this life may be, it is like the pleasure of a dream in a single sleep, which disappears when one wakes up. Keep in mind the benefits of thinking and meditating on the impermanence of life as mentioned above, so as to be prepared without regret at the time of death. Now is the meditation on compassion and bodhicitta. In the Sutra of the Fortunate Aeon, it is said: Whoever can perfect a hundred million kotis of merit, giving sentient beings with contaminated things, is not as good as someone who generates the supreme bodhicitta, whose merit is incomparable. Thus it is said. Generally speaking, the Mahayana

Entering the path, generating Bodhicitta is very important. As the scripture says: Loving-kindness and compassion are the common path of Dharma, for entering the Great Vehicle. Therefore, there are four aspects to this: aspiration, engagement, training, and benefit. Among them, the first is aspiration Bodhicitta: Just as the ten directions of space, no matter how measured, have no limit, so too do the realms of the world have no limit. All of these are pervaded without interruption by sentient beings of the six realms. Among all these sentient beings, there is not one who has not been my parent, for there is no one who has not slept in their womb or drunk their milk. Just as my births are countless, so too is there no number or limit to the times that sentient beings have been my mother. As it is said in the Stainless Confession Tantra: If the accumulated flesh and bones were gathered, they would equal the size of the world; if the accumulated pus and blood were gathered, they would equal the size of the great ocean; if the accumulated karmic connections were gathered, they would be inconceivable and beyond expression. Revolved through the three realms, passing through countless births and deaths. Thus, just as they have been my parents countless times, like the mother of this life, protecting me from all harm, holding me with a loving heart, nurturing me with compassionate actions, and bestowing benefits from countless immeasurable sources, they are all mothers of immense kindness. What reason is there to discriminate between those who are close and distant, or to choose between the mother of this life and the mother of another life? Therefore, all these mothers desire happiness, yet they abandon virtue, the cause of happiness, as if it were poison. They do not want suffering, yet they take up sin, the cause of suffering, as if it were medicine, and they only practice these, thus revolving in samsara from one life to the next, becoming miserable. How pitiful! May they have happiness, may they be free from suffering, may they have happiness without suffering, and may they ultimately attain the precious state of Buddhahood. When the four immeasurables arise in one's mind, this is aspiration Bodhicitta. As it is said in the Essence of the Lotus: Aspiring for the benefit of sentient beings is the swift path to perfect Buddhahood. Furthermore, these mothers who have nurtured us with kindness since beginningless time are bewildered by the darkness of ignorance, intoxicated by the agitation of afflictions, devoid of the eye of discernment, and without the guidance of a virtuous friend, they are solely of the nature of sinful actions.
