One should carefully consider the reduction of obstacles and so on. Since life is short, one should abandon distractions and diligently practice the Dharma. Since one is born, death is certain. As stated in the Holy White Lotus Sutra: 'If there is birth, there is death. If there is gathering, there is separation.' Since time does not stand still, one does not know when one will die. As stated in the Auspicious Night Sutra: 'Who knows if one will die tomorrow? One should act accordingly today. The great army of the Lord of Death, is not your friend.' So it is said. Since it is uncertain where one will die, one should think, 'Will I die here?' when walking, sitting, or doing anything. As stated in the Sutra of the Good Arm: 'Whether on a mountain, in a valley, a dangerous place, at home, on a road, by a riverbank, which place on earth will be my final resting place? One should know that there is no forewarning, and one should turn away from worldly pleasures.' So it is said. Death is certain due to various causes, and it is uncertain when it will occur. As stated in the Vinaya: 'Some die from choking on a mouthful of food, and some die from medicine. What need is there to mention unfavorable conditions? Therefore, nothing is certain.' So it is said. Since there is no increase but only decrease, death is certain. As stated in the Song of Impermanence: 'Like a pond with its source cut off, there is no increase but only decrease. All are on the path to death. Who can rely on sudden life?' So it is said. As stated in the Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life: 'Day and night, without pause, this life is constantly diminishing. If there is no additional increase, how can I not die?' So it is said. Death has many causes, and life has few, so death is certain. As stated in the Precious Garland: 'The causes of death are many, and the causes of life are few. Among these causes, death is easier. Therefore, always accumulate Dharma.' Furthermore, one must abandon retinues, possessions, relatives, close friends, and even the cherished illusory body, and go alone. As stated in the Sutra of Advice to the King: 'When time compels the king to depart, possessions, friends, and relatives will not follow. Wherever beings are, wherever they go, karma follows like a shadow.' So it is said. Moreover, parents, siblings, children, wives, servants, wealth, and roots cannot accompany one. Whatever good or evil one does, the white and black karma follows like body and shadow.

One should follow accordingly, as it is said in the Sutra Requested by Glorious Gift: 'Seeking enjoyment through mixed actions, nourishing sons and wives, at the time of death, which is extremely painful, sons and wives will not become protectors. Just as what is obtained through various labors, sons and wives will also be abandoned, one will come to experience suffering alone, they will not take my share at that time. Parents, siblings, sons and wives, servants and wealth, and the assembly of roots, after death they do not go along, actions follow, and children depart.' Thus. Therefore, at the time of death, there is no other refuge except the sacred Dharma, so one should strive to practice the Dharma with intense diligence. Furthermore, in the Great Perfection Mind at Rest, it says: 'Retinue and enjoyment, relatives who are closely related, beauty and youth, power and noble lineage, all must be abandoned, and one must go alone, and what does not diminish, black and white karma follows, at that time there is no other refuge than the Dharma, why do you not strive diligently now?' Thus. Also, in the Wish-Fulfilling Treasury, it says: 'In the precious palace adorned with the four continents, the appearance of various beautiful lands is well arranged, but it will be destroyed without even a particle of dust, look at it becoming a nature of nothingness. The body and enjoyment that are taken closely, and all the appearances of this life, are all impermanent, illusory in nature, and will deceive us. No matter what you think, there is no essence, no matter what you think, it will not be beneficial, so drink the wisdom of generating renunciation and weariness, from today onwards, accumulate the treasury of the sacred Dharma!' Thus. Thus, showing the signs and standards of meditating on impermanence, in the Great Perfection Mind at Rest, it says: 'Therefore, the Dharma of benefit and happiness for this life and the next is accomplished, strive to practice with intense diligence, abandon this life, destroy the delusion of self-grasping, in short, all good qualities are accomplished, completely eliminate all faults, it is the cause of liberation, the root of all Dharmas is to lower the thought of impermanence.' Thus. Furthermore, in the Wish-Fulfilling Treasury, it says: 'In the measure of walking, one sees the destruction of compounded things, the diligent one fears and abandons the affairs of this life, not even for a moment does one abide in ordinariness.'
