If dreams are not true, and daytime appearances are true, then dreams are illusions and daytime appearances are not illusions, so one must believe that in dreams there are sentient beings and in daytime appearances there are Buddhas. If both are illusions, then there is no difference between truth and falsehood, because appearing and grasping at what is not as what is, is called illusion. Furthermore, even though in the past one may have eaten Mount Meru as food and drunk the ocean dry, one is not full now, and even though one may have worn the three thousand worlds as clothing, one is not warm, these should be understood as symbols of mere appearance that are not actually established. Third, there are four reasons, including the refutation of doubts, why it is necessary to understand emptiness: showing the faults of clinging to the body, the main basis for the arising of grasping at reality, by means of categories of names; dispelling wrong ideas about establishing emptiness; explaining the divisions of the wisdom that realizes; as long as the grasping of dualistic appearance does not cease, the appearance of benefit and harm will occur, but in reality it will not be established, and this is how it will be concluded. First, showing the faults of clinging to the body, the main basis for the arising of grasping at reality, by means of categories of names: If one does not understand that this appearance as the body is emptiness and clings to it as true, then the fault is very great. Because relying on this, one strives for the sake of this body, and because of this effort, one eats the fruit of omniscience, so one is a flesh-eating demon; in samsara, the cycle of rebirth continues, showing the phenomena of birth and death, so one is the god of death; for the sake of the body, one seeks comfort such as clothing, and is bound by the clinging of attachment and aversion, thereby cutting off the lifeline of liberation, so one is a life-cutter; because one is also a life-taker who steals the breath of constant happiness. By this example, all clinging to the objects of the six consciousnesses is like a deer seeing a mirage as water and running towards it, but in reality not even a particle of essence is established, so one should strive to realize that all object appearances are the nature of emptiness. Second, dispelling wrong ideas about establishing emptiness: After establishing it in this way, even if one understands emptiness, it still remains in the same way as before in a true manner, and does not disappear, so what is the need to understand it in this way? If one does not understand that the nature of what is to be meditated on is emptiness, then all meditation will definitely fall into the side of the unstated. And

If other arising-stage meditations cannot liberate by merely understanding or realizing a little, then what reason is there that merely realizing emptiness must manifest the reality of no self-nature? Furthermore, if one thinks that since it is empty from the beginning, it is the same whether one knows it is empty or not, then one should know that samsara and nirvana, liberation and delusion, arise from the difference between knowledge and ignorance, knowing and not knowing. Therefore, it is crucial to know that awareness is essential. Some people now say that one must know through one's own power and that knowing through learning and studying is useless. This is also a perverse statement, because from beginningless time, one has wandered in samsara because one has not realized through one's own power. By learning and studying, one will realize a view that is in accordance with all the tantras, agamas, and instructions. Furthermore, it is fine to realize emptiness after exerting great effort in learning and studying, or to realize it without exerting any effort at all. For example, it is like finding gold through great effort or finding it in bed without any effort; the gold itself is neither good nor bad. Third, explaining the divisions of the wisdom that realizes: The discriminating wisdom that establishes all appearances as empty is called individual discriminating wisdom. The subsequent wisdom that continuously ascertains samsara and nirvana as the nature of great emptiness is called the wisdom that realizes selflessness. These two wisdoms should be generated in the mindstream: first realize, then experience, and finally gain conviction. This is the essential instruction. Fourth, as long as the grasping of dualistic appearance has not subsided, although the appearance of benefit and harm will arise, the conclusion is made in the manner that it is not established in reality: In this way, it is unreasonable to think that the body and so on are merely appearances and not established, because even if one realizes emptiness, if the body is touched by fire and water or struck by arrows and spears, the pain of suffering will arise. As long as one has not reached the realm where the nature of phenomena is exhausted, dualistic appearance will not subside. As long as it has not subsided, the appearance of benefit and harm will arise continuously. But in ultimate reality, even the fire of hell is not established as something that burns. Therefore, one should know that from the perspective of appearance, it is merely appearance, and from the perspective of emptiness, nothing is established at all. These are also the instructions spoken by the Omniscient Great One.
