If it exists, then from where do all the phenomena of outer and inner, container and contained, and especially the parts of one's own body and mind, arise? Examining what the lord of the arising itself is like, etc., one traces back to the place where there is no source of arising. Secondly, in searching for the nature of the self that exists in between, if the self exists, then the dwelling place and the dweller must be distinct from each other, and it must be established as a true entity with characteristics that both sides possess. Therefore, one should examine whether or not it is so in this way: What is called "self"? The head is the head, not the self. The scalp and bones, eyes, ears, nose, tongue, teeth, brain, flesh, blood, serum, veins, and tendons that are parts of the head are also not the self. Similarly, the hand and its parts, the shoulder blade, arm, forearm, fingers, etc., and also the vertebrae, ribs, chest, lungs, heart, liver, gall bladder, spleen, intestines, kidneys, urine, and feces, and the foot and its parts, the thigh, knee, calf, ankle, toes, etc., and in general, the outer skin of the body, the middle muscle fat, the inner bones, and the collection of secret genitals are also not the self. Consciousness is also not the self, because it is called consciousness, not self. Therefore, what is called "self" is not established, and the dwelling place cannot be found either. Since there is no dwelling place and no lord, one should know that its nature is emptiness. Thirdly, the way of ultimately transcending the place of going is that, similarly, by examining the place of going of what is called "self" and the nature of the goer itself, one should be certain that one has transcended the place of going and the lord. Fourthly, showing the example of appearing and speaking even though it does not exist, if so, then what is that which appears as the self? It is like a mirage that appears even though it does not exist in reality, and speaking of the self by name is also speaking without the meaning of what is spoken being established, one should know that it is like speaking of a rabbit's horn. Although one clings to "I" at all times and in all places, when searching in the phenomena of the aggregates, there is nothing to point to, and the place of arising and the place of going are also completely absent, just like the appearance of a mirage and speaking of a rabbit's horn. This verse is also an intermediate verse summarizing the essential points. Secondly, establishing the selflessness of phenomena, there are four: searching for the basis of imputation of the name, the sign of true existence.

Destroying the clinging to self. Attacking the vulnerabilities of benefit and harm. Demolishing the false fortresses of hope and fear. First, seeking the basis of imputation for names, there are two parts. Seeking the meaning imputed by names, thereby establishing emptiness, and how the dependent arising of appearances arises from emptiness. The first of these has three aspects. How to establish the emptiness of phenomena encompassed by their own nature. Applying reasoning to other phenomena not encompassed by it. And how, even from the transformation of name and meaning, it is empty because it is not established by its own nature. First, how to establish the emptiness of phenomena encompassed by their own nature is: Like one's own head, for any phenomenon whatsoever, if one clings to it as a truly existent entity, thinking "this is this," then it is called the self of phenomena. If it exists, then the meaning imputed by its own name must be found on the object, so examine it like this: Why is it called "head," and what is it imputed to? Is it because it is the first part of the body to form? Is it because it is round? Is it called head because it points upwards? The head is not the first part of the body to form. Not everything that is round is called a head. The so-called above and below, if examined and analyzed, are also not established. Hair is not the head. Skin, bones, and brain, and eyes, ears, nose, and tongue are also not the head. If they are separated one by one, they are not the head, but if one thinks that they are called head when they are gathered together, then if one cuts off the head of a living being and first breaks it down into coarse particles and then into extremely fine particles, even if one shows it to all the people living in Jambudvipa (Earth), one would not say that it is a head. Moreover, even if one mixes it with water and kneads it into a ball, it would not be called a head. Therefore, one should know that the so-called "head" is merely a verbal expression and imputation, and that the object of the expression is nowhere to be found. Similarly, the eyes themselves are also a pair of bubbles, and if one separates the eyelids, tears, blood vessels, and blood, etc., then these separate parts are also not the eyes. Nor are they the eyes when gathered together. Nor is it the seer, because the seer is the innate consciousness itself, and not this bubble that is now called the eye, but one should know that there is a seer in dreams and in the bardo (intermediate state). The ears are also not the hearer when the ear canal and skin, etc., are separated or gathered together. The nose is also when the nostrils and skin, etc., are separated.
