Those things that lack inherent existence should be understood as merely appearances, not truly established. If one does not understand that this appearance as a body is emptiness and clings to it as real, it is a very great fault. For the sake of this body, due to the power of diligent effort, one consumes the fruit of omniscience, therefore one is a flesh-eating demon. From samsara to samsara, passing through generations, one displays the appearance of birth and death, therefore one is a death-dealer. For the sake of the body, one seeks comfort such as clothing, and is bound by clinging to hope, fear, attachment, and aversion, thereby severing the life-force of liberation, therefore one is a killer. One steals the breath of constant bliss, therefore one is also a life-taker. Therefore, all clinging to the appearances of the six aggregates is like a deer seeing a mirage as water and running towards it, in which not even a particle of essence is found. Again, one might think, even if one understands emptiness in this way, it still remains in the same way as before, as something real, and does not disappear, so what is the use of understanding it in this way? If one does not know that the essence of what is to be meditated upon is emptiness, then all meditation will definitely fall into the realm of the unmentioned. Generally, even through the practice of the generation stage and all other concentrations, one will not be liberated by merely understanding or realizing them. Therefore, what reason is there that merely realizing emptiness must manifest the state of non-existence? Again, one might think, if it is empty from the beginning, then there is no difference between knowing emptiness and not knowing emptiness. The difference between knowing and not knowing, between awareness and unawareness, is the cause of the arising of samsara and nirvana, liberation and delusion, therefore knowing and awareness are crucial to realize. Furthermore, some might say that if one cannot realize it through one's own power, then hearing and contemplation will not be effective. From beginningless time, it is because one has not realized it through one's own power that one has wandered in samsara. Through learning and practice, one will realize the view of emptiness that is in accordance with all the scriptures and instructions, so understand this. Moreover, whether one realizes emptiness by exerting great effort through learning and practice, or whether one realizes emptiness without exerting any effort at all, for example, finding gold after exerting great effort, or finding gold in a gold mine without exerting any effort at all, the gold itself has no good or bad quality. In this way, the discriminating wisdom that determines all appearances as emptiness is called the discriminating awareness wisdom. And one must be certain that samsara and nirvana are the great emptiness.

After that, the wisdom that realizes selflessness arises continuously, and this is called wisdom. Having generated these two wisdoms in the continuum, one must first realize, then experience in the middle, and finally gain conviction, which is the key. Furthermore, it is unreasonable to think that the body and so on are merely appearances and do not exist. If someone says that for the body of a person who has realized emptiness, if it is touched by fire or water, or struck by arrows, spears, sticks, etc., pain will arise. Then, until one reaches the realm where the nature of reality is exhausted, dualistic appearances will not cease. Until they cease, the appearance of benefit and harm will continue to arise, but in reality, even the fire of hell cannot burn it. Having said this, he disappeared. Also, at one time, when I met the great accomplished SaraHa, I asked: Great Lord of Accomplishment, with what do you purify obscurations? How do you practice the deity? With what do you subdue demons and obstacles? Please grant me instructions. He gave instructions, saying: Alas, great man, you must attack the weaknesses of benefit and harm. What is called obscuration is the ignorance that the essence of the ground is emptiness, which is obscuration and ignorance, and its stability is called obstacles. This cannot be purified by ordinary effort, such as striving for virtuous actions of body and speech, but rather, like this, by ascertaining the nature of reality with discriminating wisdom, the obscurations will naturally be eliminated. Where do all the beneficial virtuous actions of body and speech abide? Where is the treasury of accumulation? The source of arising? The place of abiding? If one examines and analyzes all the places of going, and it turns out that there is no place to abide, then where is benefit established? If one examines the emptiness of mind, inside, outside, and in between, from beginning to end, where is there any benefit? If one determines that there is no place to abide, then it is merely accumulating merit in samsara. Similarly, where is the heap of accumulated sins? Where is its storehouse? In the emptiness of mind, inside, outside, and in between, from beginning to end, where has it caused harm? Thus, the person who always applies body and speech to virtuous actions, and the person who spends a lifetime in evil deeds, if one examines the mind-stream of these two people carefully, then there is not even a particle of difference in all the attachment, aversion, hope, fear, taking and rejecting of the minds of these two people. Liberation is also the mind-stream liberating through liberation, delusion is also the mind-stream deluding through delusion, both
