Just as they carry unbearable burdens, they are like livestock being pierced through the nose, shaved, bled, milked, made to plow, and ridden. Due to ignorance, they endure the suffering of being tamed, unable to bear the burden, suffering greatly, and are extremely pitiful. Furthermore, wild animals and beasts of prey that dwell in the mountains are also killed by cruel weapons, or caught in traps, and due to unbearable fear, their bodies strike the ground, taking their own lives, and suffering all kinds of pain. Birds, dogs, insects, and so on, also suffer from hunger and thirst because they cannot find food and drink, to the extent that they rival the hungry ghosts, and the number is immeasurable. Strong animals devour weak animals, and weak animals gnaw on strong animals; in summer they suffer from the heat, and in winter they suffer from the cold and faint; the Nagas also face the threat of Garuda, as well as the threat of sun and sand, and the threat of poison and spells; in addition, there are countless sufferings brought about by ignorance, they are always tormented and extremely pitiful. The root cause of being born in this evil realm is ignorance, because their past evil deeds, none of which were not evil actions, and now they continue to commit evil deeds, so they cannot avoid being born in these evil realms. Once born, evil deeds will continue to grow, and they can only wander and drift in endless samsara. Thinking of this, we should strive to cultivate and resolve to attain liberation in this life. Om. Thus, the lifespan of animals is uncertain. Some die as soon as they are born, some can only survive for a summer, some can live for many years, and some can even live for countless years, so there is no certainty. If one thinks that it is enough to be liberated from these evil realms and attain the status of gods and humans in the heavens, that is not correct. Even in the three realms of heaven, although there is temporary happiness, enjoyment will eventually become the root of suffering, and ultimately one will fall into the evil realms.

One should contemplate and carefully examine the lack of a place of ease, and strive for a method to permanently escape from existence. First, the realms of gods and humans: Although renowned as an excellent physical basis, it is also subject to the common suffering of the four great rivers of birth, aging, sickness, and death. Based on this, there are also specific sufferings that are manifestly present. First, the suffering of birth is that when males and females engage in intercourse, sentient beings of the intermediate state gather like flies on rotting flesh in summer. When they swarm, a sentient being with the fortune to be born as a human enters the womb, grasping and collecting both sperm and blood, initially becoming viscous. In the middle, it becomes thin. Then it becomes thick, and finally slightly hardens. When it is round like the flesh of a frog, one experiences the intense suffering of darkness and crowding. The parts of the body, from the first limb to the fingers, gradually form. Thus, as all the senses gradually become complete, one smells the unpleasant odor of the mother's womb. Like being confined in a dark room where no light is visible, like a prisoner in confinement. When the mother is full, it is as painful as being pressed between rocks. When hot food is eaten, it is as painful as being boiled in hot water. When cold food is eaten, it is as painful as being immersed in ice water. When hungry, it is as painful as falling into an abyss. During movement, walking, and standing, it is as painful as being carried away by the wind. When males and females engage in intercourse, it is as painful as being pressed between two mountains. When the number of months is complete, at the time of birth, from existence, one is turned upside down by the wind, and it is as painful as the lungs and heart coming out of the mouth. When passing through the birth canal, it is as painful as being pulled through an iron pipe. When falling to the ground, it is as painful as being thrown into a thorn bush. When the placenta is removed, it is as painful as being skinned or as if the skin were scraped. When the mother takes one in her lap, one is tormented by intense fear, like a baby bird being seized by a hawk. When afflicted by hunger, thirst, heat, cold, and illness, one cries.
