Meditate on impermanence and death. (Because) the year is impermanent, changing into spring and winter; the month is impermanent, changing into black and white halves; the day is impermanent, changing into day and night; the day is impermanent, changing into three periods, by thinking about these, one should remember the impermanence of one's own life. In general, from the moment of birth until death, life does not stay even for a moment but passes away, faster than a swift arrow. For all these sentient beings who have sight and feeling, not knowing that their own lives are passing away and that they must die, like blind people wandering in circles on an empty plain, one should feel ashamed of this and practice impermanence oneself. (Furthermore,) some people waste their lives, their hair turns white, their teeth fall out, the strength of their bodies declines, and they are unable to stand or walk, yet they still cling to samsara and are still preparing for samsara. Thinking of those who plan for the future when they are fifteen or sixteen years old, one should generate the fear of forgetting one's own impermanence and death. Moreover, those who suffer from severe illnesses such as colds, throat diseases, and stomach ailments still plan for many years of activities, such as next year and the year after. Thinking of these people, one must generate the fear of forgetting death, so one must be careful. Some people, in order to enjoy a long life, cultivate long-term plans and spend great effort in accumulating food and wealth. When death suddenly comes, they abandon all their body and enjoyment and go to the next life in disappointment and sorrow; the corpse that was cherished and nurtured is thrown to birds and dogs, and all the food and wealth are enjoyed by others. Thinking of these things, one should practice the impermanence of death. Some people cultivate great power and great rights, and waste their lives like gods in laziness and indulgence. When death finally comes, they are attached to happiness and glory, and feel frustrated and depressed, even looking at the living with dead eyes. Thinking of these things, one should know that the actions of this life are meaningless and must be abandoned. Some people fight and feud with others for the sake of greatness and fame. When they suddenly die from illness or a violent accident, all the victories and fame...

From that moment on, like a dream fading away, contemplate impermanence of death with careful consideration. Life has no certainty. Some die within two or three days of birth, some in youth, some in adulthood, and some in old age, etc. There is no certainty in life. Therefore, train the mind in the uncertainty of when one will die. Some previously strived for victory and enjoyment, and later wished to practice Dharma, but time runs out without success, and they face death. Some accumulate wealth, subdue enemies, and protect relatives, hoping that one day they will succeed and live a happy life. They strive for this, but without knowing when life will end, they face the morning of death. Even at that time, thinking about how their tasks and work are not yet finished, they should strive to contemplate the uncertainty of when they will die. Even I, from now until now, have wasted my life, spending days in distraction and laziness, and nights sleeping like a corpse. Now, many years, months, and days of this life have passed, but it feels like a moment and no realization has arisen. Even if I live for another hundred years, at the time of death, I will only see the ground with my eyes. Cutting off these meaningless and unfinished tasks, I wonder if I shouldn't practice the true Dharma of death. Adjust the mind. At all times and in all circumstances, I feel that life has been exhausted, and now it is time to face death. Relatives and friends are of no help, nor will they follow after death. Now, if he is born in a neighbor's house after death, at that time they will not recognize each other, but will see each other as enemies and hate each other. What is the point of that? Even though I have good intentions for them, they can only go according to their own merit and karma, and it is of no help. Now, for the benefit of myself and others, if I practice profound Dharma, that will surely be beneficial. Remember this repeatedly and constantly. Whatever you eat, think that it is the last food you will eat in this life, and remember death. Whatever clothes you wear, Oṃ (Tibetan, Devanagari: ॐ, Romanized Sanskrit: oṃ, Literal meaning: Oṃ). This is also the last piece of clothing you will wear in this life. Whatever you do, think that it is the last time you will do all the actions of this life. Strive to think and train the mind. In short, at all times and in all circumstances, remember that you do not know when you will die, and that this life is like a dream.
