Therefore, that which gives rise to self-grasping is the afflicted mind (nyon yid). It abides in the nature of the affliction of pride. Its nature is ignorance, and its manifestation is pride. It obscures the body of Ratnasambhava, obscuring it in the feeling aggregate. From this, the mind arises, establishing the ability for appearances to arise on the inanimate emptiness of the ground, and revealing the clear aspect, this is called mind (yid). It abides in the nature of the affliction of desire. Its nature is ignorance, and its manifestation is desire. It obscures the body of Amitabha, obscuring it in the perception aggregate. Thus, when the five elements, the five transformed elements, and the aggregates appear, it is also a state where skillful means and wisdom are inseparable. How is it? The five lights are the mother, the five elements are the father, the five elements are the mother, the five aggregates are the father, emptiness is the mother, appearance is the father, abiding in the union of skillful means and wisdom. Karma Lingpa said: Phenomenal existence is pure, the realm of deities and goddesses. From the essence of the five elements and the five wisdoms, the five lights arise, and due to the entry of grasping, it transforms into the five elements, etc. Commentary: The fully perfected father and mother of transformation, etc. As it is said in the tantra: Fill the space where skillful means and wisdom are inseparable. Thus, although it is pure from the beginning, abiding in the nature of deities, due to the control of pervasive conceptualization, it appears as the five elements and the five aggregates. All five of these bases of delusion are from the inner radiance, the five natures manifest as outer functions. The nature of the five poisons that manifest as functions, like from a flame, the conceptual thoughts of afflictions spread like sparks. Thus, the alaya, etc., show the stage of existence. Thus, the empty and clear part where the alaya and mind are equally expanded, on that, the place where the appearances of form, sound, smell, taste, and touch arise, the six senses are uninterrupted, this is called mind (yid). Then, the cause of the movement of karmic wind and the ability of the ground to manifest, both as the cause and condition, the time is ripe, relying on the ground, and appearing as form in relation to the ground itself not being different, various kinds of appearances arise. What is the object of the appearing form, that is only the term called eye consciousness. For example, the appearing object...

That which is like an ocean is called the object (yul). That which is like an image, a reflection, or a star is called the apprehended (gzung ba). Grasping is the arising of conceptual thought that takes the three—happiness, suffering, and neutrality—by separately naming that form, separately grasping its meaning, separately viewing it as a thing. This is the subtle mind consciousness, which is called the mind of eye-grasping. Similarly, in the space of mind that is clear and bright, the realm where sound arises without interruption is called the object. That which appears as sound through the activity of the wind of karma is called the apprehended. That is, separately naming that sound, separately grasping its meaning, separately viewing it as a thing, and then taking the three—happiness, suffering, and neutrality—is called the mind of ear-grasping. Again, this arises from dependent origination through the gathering of causes and conditions. The cause is the fundamental space that is clear, bright, and capable of appearing. The condition is the miraculous activity of the wind of karma. When these two, cause and condition, come together, the appearance of sound arises dependently, without being there before. What does it depend on? It depends on the ground. What does it relate to? It relates to the ground and the appearance of sound, which are non- dual. What arises? The appearance of sound arises without being there before. Similarly, in the space of mind that is clear, bright, and free from obscuration, the realm where smell arises is called the object. That which appears as smell through the activity of the wind of karma is called the apprehended. That is, separately naming that smell, separately grasping its meaning, separately viewing it as a thing, and then taking the three—happiness, suffering, and neutrality—is called the mind of nose-grasping. Again, this arises from dependent origination through the gathering of causes and conditions. The cause is the fundamental space that is clear, bright, and capable of appearing. The condition is the miraculous activity of the wind of karma. When these two, cause and condition, come together, the appearance of smell arises dependently, without being there before. What does it depend on? It depends on the ground. What does it relate to? It relates to the ground and the appearance of smell, which are non-dual. What arises? The appearance of smell arises without being there before. Oṃ! Similarly, in the space of mind that is clear and bright, the realm where taste arises without interruption
