It is because it is like that. Having meditated in this way, if one sees that meditating on the exchange of self and others generates joy and that exchange is possible, then the order of how to meditate: The so-called exchange of self and others is not to cultivate the mind by thinking of others as "I" and thinking of their eyes, etc., as "mine," but rather to exchange the positions of the two minds of cherishing oneself and abandoning others, generating the mind of cherishing others as oneself and abandoning oneself as others. Therefore, the so-called exchange of one's own happiness and others' suffering is also to regard cherishing oneself as an enemy, thereby preventing the deliberate accomplishment of one's own happiness, and to regard cherishing others as a virtue, thereby preventing the abandonment of others' suffering, and to focus primarily on eliminating their suffering. In short, it is to engage in eliminating the suffering of others without regard for one's own happiness. There are two obstacles to cultivating this mind: holding that the self and others, the bases of happiness and suffering for oneself and others, are established as separate entities like blue and yellow, and based on this, believing that if happiness and suffering arise in oneself, then this is mine, so it should be accomplished or eliminated; if it arises in others, then it is thought that this belongs to others, so it should be abandoned. The antidote to this is that the essence of self and others is not separate, but rather arises in dependence on each other, like this mountain and that mountain. For example, the thought of that mountain arises in dependence on this mountain, but if one goes to that mountain, then the thought of this mountain arises in that mountain, just like this principle. Therefore, the thought of blue itself arises in dependence on the color blue, which is different from not generating other thoughts. Furthermore, the obstacle of thinking that one does not strive to eliminate the suffering of others because it does not harm oneself is eliminated by: if it were so, then in order to eliminate the suffering of poverty in old age, it would not be necessary to accumulate wealth in youth, because the suffering of old age does not harm the young. Similarly, the same applies to past and future lives, months and days, morning and evening, etc. Likewise, the suffering of the feet should not be eliminated by the hands, because they are others. If it is said that old age and youth are the same continuum, and the hands and feet are the same collection, so they are different from the two of self and others, then the "Entering the Bodhisattva's Way of Life" says: Continuum

The so-called "continuum" and "collection" are false, like rosaries, armies, etc. Just as a continuum appears to be continuous, for example, a rosary, It has a continuum, but it does not refer to each individual bead. Even if removed from each individual bead, it is not there in the remaining place, and also many gathered together. For example, an army, etc., does not refer to each individual person, nor is it produced from others, so it is like a falsehood. The so-called "continuum" refers to the continuation of many past and future moments, and "collection" is merely a designation for many parts gathered together. In reality, there is no such thing as being able to exist independently or autonomously. One's own "self" and the "self" of others must also be established upon that continuum of collection. In reality, there is no such thing as existing by its own nature, not relying on "self" and "other." Because from beginningless time, one has been accustomed to clinging to "self," one cannot bear suffering. If one also cultivates cherishing others in that way, one will also become unable to bear the suffering of others. Having eliminated the obstacles to exchange in this way, the actual method of cultivation is: to properly contemplate the virtues of cherishing others and the faults of cherishing oneself, thereby causing this concept to collapse. As it says in the Bodhicharyavatara: "All the happiness there is in this world arises from wanting others to be happy. All the suffering there is in this world arises from wanting oneself to be happy." The meaning is that all the temporary and ultimate happiness in this world arises from cherishing others and wishing for the happiness of sentient beings. Through cherishing others, one prolongs their lives by saving them, one has possessions by giving, one is born in a high position by respecting others, and one hears many good names by praising the virtues of others, and so on. In short, from now enjoying slightly warmer clothes and eating a small amount of delicious food, to the wealth and happiness of gods and humans, and all the qualities up to the state of perfect Buddhahood, all arise from that. Similarly, all the great and small physical and mental sufferings in this world arise from cherishing oneself and wanting oneself to be happy. Due to attachment to this cherishing, one accumulates many non-virtuous actions in order to achieve the happiness of desired objects, and one develops hatred towards those who obstruct oneself.
