Because of this, or transforming the suffering of beings into oneself, abandoning self-cherishing, and transforming oneself into the lifeline of all beings, that is, transforming into the source of happiness, it is also permissible to explain separately by applying this way of cherishing others. In the Compendium of Learnings, it says: "Abandoning one's own happiness, with a mind without hope, day and night diligently striving for the needs of others." This also shows the way of giving one's own happiness to others, that is, abandoning oneself, and diligently striving for the needs or benefits of other beings. Moreover, this way of diligence is very special, even in dreams, one should think of others day and night as if cherishing oneself, which shows the way of cherishing others. Regarding this, the great Bodhisattva Shantideva emphasized and narrated, and now I will summarize its essence: First, one must practice the equality of self and others. The way is that one must equally achieve the happiness of both self and others, and eliminate suffering. The reason is that both self and others, as objects of experience, are the same in the feeling of happiness and suffering; as the subject of experience, the intention of consciousness is also the same. Because the suffering of others is also harmful, it is the suffering that should be eliminated, and there is no difference from one's own suffering; the happiness of others is also beneficial, it is what should be achieved, and there is no difference from one's own happiness. Moreover, other beings are the objects of eliminating suffering and achieving happiness, and in all aspects they are the same as oneself. Moreover, both self and others desire happiness and do not want to suffer, which is also the same. If someone thinks that the situation is not like this, because there are many other beings, and oneself is only one, so it is impossible to protect them like protecting oneself, and the suffering of others will not cause harm to oneself. Then, for example, there are many distinctions such as hands and feet, but they can still be regarded as "my body" and treated uniformly, similarly, although there are many beings, they can also be uniformly regarded as objects of eliminating suffering and achieving benefits. Even if one's own suffering does not cause harm to others, one is still attached to one's own suffering and cannot bear it, similarly, even if the suffering of others does not cause harm to oneself, one should treat others as oneself.

If you think like this, the wisdom of knowing that my suffering and others are no different will arise, because the terms "I" and "other" are merely established by conceptual thought and are not established from the perspective of reality. Viewing self and others equally is the basis of all benefit and happiness. Because it is reasonable to generate the mind of cherishing others more than oneself. As an example, no matter what kind of wrong conceptual thoughts arise that contradict this, one must use correct wisdom to dispel them. If the wisdom of equality between self and others arises through thinking, as it is said in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: "Whoever wants to quickly protect himself and others, should practice the exchange of self and others, the supreme secret practice." Because for some people of the Hinayana lineage, this is something that their wisdom cannot accommodate, so it needs to be kept secret. The secret supreme quality of having excellent qualities is that after exchanging self and others, one must cultivate cherishing others more than oneself, because cherishing oneself is the door to all decline, and cherishing others is the source of all perfect prosperity. If you think that you cannot generate the thought of exchanging self and others, then you can generate it if you get used to it, as it is said in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: "Thus, by the power of habituation, even the name of someone who is feared, can be transformed into a cause of joy." And "My body is also placed in the body of others, then it is not difficult." It is said. For example, in the past, one would be afraid even to hear the name of one's enemy, but later, after reconciling with him and becoming friends, one would be unhappy without him, because everything follows habit. Therefore, it is not so difficult to place one's body in the body of others. If one gets used to treating others like oneself and treating oneself like others, such a thought will arise. If you think that no matter how accustomed you are to the body of others, it is impossible to generate a thought like treating your own body, then this body of mine is also composed of the sperm and blood of my parents, so just as one generates self-grasping due to being accustomed to self-grasping for a body composed of a part of the body of others, if one is accustomed to cherishing the body of others as one's own, such a thought will arise, as it is said in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: "Therefore, just as you grasp the sperm and blood of others as your own, so should you constantly habituate yourself to the body of others."
