All aspects of samsara and nirvana, and so on, arise from the power of the essence of the mind itself, the clear light nature, the Sugata-garbha. As the great Pal Saraha says, "The mind itself is the seed of all; from it arise samsara and nirvana." Similarly, it is said in the Kunjed Gyalpo Tantra, "If you wish to realize this meaning definitively, contemplate it like the sky. The meaning is that the nature of reality is unborn; the sign is that the mind itself is unceasing." Thus, the basis, the essence of ultimate truth, should be understood as being like the sky. The sign is indicated by these appearances that arise from the power of the unceasing mind itself. The meaning is that it abides in the nature of unborn reality. From that, the example and meaning are easy to understand. The way the sign exemplifies is that because these appearances of the basis-appearance power exist, it is established that there is an ultimate basis for these appearances, the abiding nature of the basis-essence. If that did not exist, there would be no basis from which these appearances could arise. Therefore, if there were no basis from which these appearances arise, there would be no appearances that arise in dependence upon it. Because the appearances that arise exist unceasingly, it is established that there is a basis of appearance from which they arise. This is because, according to the treatises on valid cognition, fire is the cause and smoke is the result, and it is impossible for a result to arise without a cause. If there is no fire, smoke will not arise. Therefore, the sign of smoke proves that there is fire, and this is in accordance with the way of reasoning. Furthermore, if the basis-essence truth is of a nature that is free from all elaborations, then the appearances of power can appear; if not, they cannot. As the glorious protector, the noble Nagarjuna, said, "For whom emptiness is possible, for them everything is possible. For whom emptiness is not possible, for them nothing is possible." The meaning and point are the same. With that meaning in mind, it is also said in the Dharmadhatu Ratnakosa, "The example of bodhicitta is like the sky." And, "The meaning is self-awareness, the sky-like bodhicitta." And, The sign is that anything at all arises from power. Having summarized the meaning of these, it is taught that the self-arisen wisdom, the nature of reality, is all-pervasive, indicated by the certainty of example, meaning, and sign. That is how it is said. The way of indicating by the sign is that the basis-appearance arises from the basis.
