Beating and so on. Some, like sheep and goats, are killed for meat, predators and the like for their skins, and some, like elephants, for their bones. Savages and the like skin them alive, and for substances like mercury, they are boiled in iron containers and the like. Outsiders and those who act in accordance with their religions burn them alive for the sake of worshiping gods, and perform meat and blood sacrifices, etc. There are many sufferings like these, just as we are now witnessing. Third, the sufferings belonging to the Naga race are as follows, from the same text: "Nagas experience happiness and suffering in the middle of the day and night, and happiness and suffering that change in the morning and evening. In some places, showers of gravel fall. Some Alone, separated from friends, threatened by inner fear. For the most part, they are ignorant and fear Garuda, etc. They possess various kinds of suffering." It is said that Nagas experience hot and cold, hunger and thirst, etc., at any time of day and night, and morning and evening. Although they experience happiness for half of those times, they suffer for the other half. In some places, showers of gravel fall. Some are driven away and abandoned by everyone, unable to integrate into the group, alone, suffering without friends. In general, they become ignorant and fear Garuda. On the shore of the unwarmed ocean of this Jambudvipa (the continent where we live), there is a forest of Shalmal trees, where four kinds of Garuda reside. Among them, egg-born Garudas eat egg-born Nagas. Womb-born Garudas eat both egg-born and womb-born Nagas. Moisture-born Garudas eat all three types of Nagas: egg-born, womb-born, and moisture-born. Transformation-born Garudas eat all four types. Furthermore, in the "Letter to a Friend," it says: "The chief Nagas have as many heads as they have sufferings arising from them." This means that the kings of the Nagas, the Naga kings, have as many heads as they have sufferings arising from them, and the more heads they have, the more suffering they have. In addition, the Naga race faces threats from other races, as well as the fear of mantras, etc. They possess various kinds of suffering. Regarding lifespan, the Abhidharmakosha says: "The longest lifespan of animals is a long kalpa." This means that the lifespan of Naga kings like Jo wo, etc., is the longest.

Those with long lifespans can last for an intermediate kalpa, while short ones are only for a morning or evening, and extremely short ones are just for a moment, so there is no certainty. Therefore, if the principle of karmic results is infallible, we will surely fall into those evil realms. If we fall, even the slightest touch of a spark on the body now, or the slight touch of cold in winter, or the suffering of hunger and thirst for a day are unbearable. So, if we are born in hells and other evil realms, how can we endure it? We should take those sufferings to heart and contemplate them every day. Abandon the causes of those sufferings, and in order to be born in a good realm, we must strive to practice at this time when we have obtained such a human body. As Lord Nagarjuna said: Extremely hot and cold, one day in hell. (Tibetan: དམྱལ་བ་ཉི་མ་གཅིག,Sanskrit Devanagari: नरकदिनैक,Sanskrit Romanization: naraka dināika,Literal Chinese meaning: hell one day) Remember. Sanskrit Romanization: smṛti,Literal Chinese meaning: remember) The emaciated pretas tormented by hunger and thirst should also be remembered. The sufferings of the ignorant are many, the animals should be watched and remembered. Abandon those causes, practice the causes of happiness. The rare human body of Jambudvipa, when obtained, should be extremely careful to cut off the causes of evil realms. It means that we should look with our eyes and remember in our hearts the sufferings of beings drowning in the various sufferings of the hot and cold hells, the pitiful pretas emaciated by hunger and thirst, and the ignorant animals, etc. Abandon the causes of these sufferings, practice the causes of being born in a good realm, and at this time when we have obtained a human body, we must be extremely careful to cut off or abandon the causes of evil realms—non-virtuous deeds. Secondly, contemplating the suffering of good realms is divided into three parts: the suffering of humans, the suffering of asuras, and the suffering of gods. First, the suffering of humans, as stated in the Wish-Fulfilling Treasury: Humans have no time for happiness, birth, old age, sickness, and death, enemies and harm are many, separation from loved ones, filled with desires, experiencing unpleasantness, desires cannot be fulfilled, suffering from heat, cold, and fatigue, repaying kindness with harm, ungratefulness, retinue acting wrongly, meaningless jealousy, no praise, meaningless slander, countless. So on and so forth, the suffering arising from these, as stated in the Letter to a Friend: Extremely unbearable, impure, squeezed and suffocating, a very narrow and dark place, entering the womb like a hell, the whole body curled up...
