Skin cracking: Even worse, due to the cold, the skin peels off, the flesh is redder than before, cracking a hundred times or more, to the point where the white bones can be clearly seen, what suffering! The lifespans of those cold hells are not short either. The Treasury states: 'A hundred years in a sesame store, One sesame seed taken out, That is the lifespan of the blister hell, The lifespan of others is twenty times.' The sesame store, that is, a large container for storing sesame seeds, in the land of Magadha, a large bag can hold eighty khals of sesame seeds, from the sesame warehouse, one sesame seed is taken out every hundred years, until it is finished, that is the lifespan of the blister hell; twenty times that is the lifespan of the blister bursting hell; similarly, the former increases by twenty khals each time, the latter is the lifespan of the latter. Third, the neighboring hells: located near the hot and cold hells, it is said to be also in the human realm and near the great ocean. Therefore, its location and suffering are not fixed. The Mind at Rest states: 'Neighboring mountains, forests, and the sky, Between rocks, fire, water, uncertain places,' Su. 'A few dwellings, gathered and alone, In that place, any suffering torments, Therefore it is called the neighboring hell.' As it is said, in uncertain places such as mountains, rocks, water, fire, and the sky, the bodies of the beings in the neighboring hells are also different, of various kinds, some on the seashore, walls, and pillars, such as the walls and pillars of monastic temples, born there because of discarding feces and urine, and manure, etc.; some are born there because of enjoying the common property of the monastic community, such as brooms, etc.; there is also something called meat scraps, like being fat but without limbs, eating one's own flesh when hungry; it is also said to exist in mortars, firewood, and tree trunks, etc., and the suffering is also different and varied according to each. Formerly, when our teacher was alive, there was a butcher living in a village who vowed not to kill at night, and as a result, he was reborn in the neighboring hell, living in a comfortable palace at night, with four beautiful women offering food and enjoyment, enjoying happiness. But during the day, that palace turns into a burning iron house, the women

There are no four kinds of terrible dog hybrids that turn into four terrible things to eat, and bats, i.e., prostitutes who commit adultery, vow not to do such things during the day. At night, prostitutes enjoy happiness during the day and suffer at night, just like the grain-born ones you see on the sandy seashore. The Vinaya says: During the day, they kill others' lives, and at night, they possess the virtues of discipline. By this karma, they obtain good results and also taste this sin. It also says: At night, they are addicted to bat-like behavior, and during the day, they possess the virtues of discipline. By this karma, they obtain good results and also taste this sin. It is just like what those ephemeral beings said to the grain-born ones. In number, there are also those who exist alone and many who exist together. In a pleasing monastery, seeing about five hundred monks residing, when the gong is struck at noon and they gather under the awning, the monastery turns into a house of burning iron, and bowls and other things become weapons.

For those deeply sinful, the mere moment of breath ceasing, The sufferings of hell are immeasurable; hearing of them yet remaining unmoved, What kind of heart is that? Surely, it is the nature of a diamond! Seeing and hearing depictions of hell, Remembering and reciting them, and even fashioning them into images, Will cause fear to arise; what need to mention those unbearable ones, Who personally experience the ripening of karma? Thus it is said, those sinful beings who have accumulated the karma to certainly experience the suffering of hell, the cessation of breathing in and out, that is, the moment of the breath being cut off, the suffering of hell is not far away, but very close. We hear of these immeasurable sufferings of hell, yet remain unmoved; that heart must surely be of the nature of a diamond! If it were not so, how could one be so fearless? Therefore, we must be deeply afraid, for the following reasons: merely seeing a painted image of hell, or hearing others describe the scenes of hell, or remembering the scenes of hell in one's mind, or reading scriptures describing hell, or imitating the images of hell with masks, costumes, etc., merely seeing these will cause fear to arise; what need to mention those who personally experience the extremely unbearable karmic results, directly experiencing the suffering of hell? Thus it is said. Second, contemplating the suffering of pretas: including those who dwell in the fundamental place, those who wander about, and those who wander in the sky. First: The abode of pretas is located five hundred yojanas below this Jambudvipa, in a place called the King's City, there is a city called Serkya, where there are no pleasing objects such as grass, water, trees, etc., only a red, desolate place like a red-hot copper pot turned upside down. There is the lord of the pretas, called the Dharma King Yama, and around him are thirty-six kinds of pretas, as described in the Sutra of Mindfulness. The pretas are tormented by hunger and thirst, their bodies are emaciated, their complexions are black, their faces are covered with hair, like burnt tree stumps, their mouths are parched, and their tongues are swollen. Moreover, their food and drink have external obstacles; driven by hunger and thirst, they seek out rivers and lakes.
