The venerable one said: Monks, similarly, it is very difficult to obtain a human existence. And the Flower Garland Sutra also says the same thing. Similarly, O Joyful One, the Womb Entrance Sutra says: For example, if a four-finger-long needle is erected upwards and a handful of mustard seeds are scattered towards it, the possibility of one mustard seed passing through the eye of the needle is like obtaining leisure. Also, like scattering a handful of peas against a glass wall and one pea sticking to the wall, it is like obtaining each leisure. Like these examples, it is difficult to obtain a human body. Third, from the perspective of its essence, it is difficult to obtain leisure because it is difficult to obtain this leisure compared to the different kinds of bad migrations. The sutra says: The extent of hell is like the size of a chariot wheel's circumference, and the number of hell beings is like the dust of the great earth. The number of pretas is like a blizzard. The number of animals is like the dregs of brewing alcohol. And in the Vinaya-vastu, in the story of the two nephews of Kungawo, it says: Dying from the bad migrations and being reborn again in the bad migrations is like the dust of the great earth, and dying from there and being reborn in the good migrations is like the dust taken by the tip of the fingernail of the perfectly enlightened Buddha. Dying from the good migrations of gods and humans and going to the bad migrations is like the dust of the great earth without any remainder. Dying from those two places and being reborn again in the good migrations is also like the dust of the fingernail. Like this, even in our visible world, the number of animals is greater than the number of humans. Among the animals, the number of lower animals such as birds is also large. Moreover, the number of insects is even greater. In summer, even in a pile of grass, a lump of horse dung, or a small puddle, there are countless insects. From this, it can be seen how difficult it is to obtain a human body. Padampa said: In general, seeing just the body of sentient beings is like not having obtained a human body. In particular, seeing scattered corpses is like only the possibility of obtaining a human body existing. Like this, even compared to the good migrations of the same kind, it is more difficult to obtain a human body than other good migrations, and among humans, it is more difficult to encounter the Dharma, and among those who encounter the Dharma, it is more difficult to practice the Dharma.

It is rare to truly practice diligently. For example, in most cities in China, tens of thousands of people gather, but as it is said, there are few practitioners of the Dharma. Moreover, they mix good and evil deeds, and very few develop faith and joy in virtue. Therefore, it is difficult to obtain a human body with leisure and endowments. It is extremely inappropriate to use this extremely rare human body to create evil. The "Letter to a Friend" says, "To use a golden vessel adorned with jewels to wipe up filth is even more foolish than being born as a human and committing sinful deeds." The "Bodhicharyavatara" says, "Having obtained such leisure, if I do not practice virtue, there is no greater deception than this, and no greater foolishness." Therefore, now that we have the favorable conditions to practice the Dharma and have freedom, we must strive to avoid falling into the lower realms and to attain happiness. The "Madhyamakavatara" says, "When one is free and has favorable conditions, if one does not grasp this as 'I,' then one will fall into a dangerous place and be controlled by others. Who will rescue one from there later?" If, at this time, we do not prevent ourselves from falling into the precipice of the lower realms, then once we fall into that precipice and become controlled by others, who will rescue us from there and lead us to higher realms? The great spiritual friend, Chen-nga Rinpoche, used to recite these words repeatedly during his practice. If we keep these words in mind, their meaning will be very profound. Therefore, the venerable peerless Jowo Rinpoche said, "A body with leisure and endowments is extremely difficult to obtain. Having obtained it, it is also extremely difficult to obtain again later. Therefore, strive to practice and make it meaningful." As it is said, we should diligently practice to make obtaining leisure and endowments meaningful. Furthermore, the "Ksitigarbha Ten-Wheel Sutra" says, "With the lamp of the sacred Dharma, free from the eight unfree states, this is the realm of the great Bodhisattvas. We should make it fruitful." Thus, possessing the lamp of the sacred Dharma and being free from the eight unfree states is the realm of great beings, and we should make it fruitful.
