Manifestation refers to the phenomenon that appears explicitly in the gateways of the senses such as the eyes. Experience refers to the phenomenon that occurs not in the gateways of the senses, but in the realm of mental perception, like a manifestation. Dream refers to a definite dream. In these phenomena, if various unpleasant sights arise, attachment, hope, and doubt will arise. Eventually, viewing these phenomena as part of oneself, one repeatedly takes them up. Eventually, wounds, swellings, insects, and so on erupt from the body, illnesses and pains arise, the heart becomes agitated, and discomfort arises. In short, whatever unpleasant things arise, one decisively cuts them off as unreal, dreamlike, without a place, and by leaving them in their own place without acceptance or rejection, they naturally subside. If unpleasant things such as illnesses occur, one does not take medicine or treat swellings, but instead wishes that such things would increase ninefold. I will bear the suffering of all parents and sentient beings. Thinking that by experiencing this, I will surely fulfill the needs of beings and that this is the beginning of my benefit for beings, one also says in speech: kyi (藏文), may all the suffering and illnesses of all sentient beings, without leaving even a trace, come upon me. I need it, I take it. I purify, I enjoy. Come, come! Gather, gather! By saying this and cultivating joy, this is a profound and special instruction for cutting off bad circumstances by trampling on them. Furthermore, whatever unpleasant, disobedient thoughts and doubts arise in the mind, except for vows and commitments, one should repeatedly trample on them with body, speech, and mind. Why is this? Because it is a profound key to cutting off the problem at its root. For inflammatory diseases such as wounds and swellings, one should also approach the stove and strong flames, and try various extremely painful methods. If the influence of shadows from clothes and lepers arises, or if such a doubt arises, one should place the place where defilement arises on top of one's head, smear it on one's body, and say, "I have received the influence of defilement," and trample on it in a hopeful manner. Here, joy and pride are mainly discussed, and the two, with obstacles and without obstacles, are made the cause and mentioned incidentally. This is a wonderful way of explaining, because joy and pride are difficult to recognize as demons, and therefore it is taught in this way. Second, to show how it deceives by examples from the past. In the past, in the great city of Magadha (modern Bihar, India), there was a practitioner

A practitioner named Yorpa Surmabhadra, having taken up diligent practice, abandoned his parents and all his siblings, and fled to the path of Dharma. The deceiving demons, having seen this, conferred. The obstructing demon said, "If I show him intense fear, I will succeed." The unobstructed demon said, "If I enter his heart and show him various joys and sorrows, I will surely succeed." The arrogant demon said, "If I cause him to generate uncertain thoughts, I will surely succeed." The joyful demon said. The obstructing demon said, "Even if I show fear, he will sever it with the 'severance' instruction, which is 'realizing selflessness,' and drain its essence, making it impossible to find a flaw again, so I will not do that." Even if the unobstructed demon enters his heart, joy and sorrow are easily recognized as opposing sides, and he can liberate them into the realm free from arising and ceasing, so he will surely become his friend again. Even if the arrogant demon stirs up thoughts, he has the instruction of 'taking bad omens as food,' 'taking bad circumstances as friends,' and 'using thoughts as strength,' so I will not do that either. Your three temptations are bad circumstances, therefore, it is easy to lead him astray, and after becoming a friend, he will become something that no one can stop in the future, so all of you help me, and if I tempt him with beautiful things, I will surely succeed." Having said that, he laughed loudly and left. The great accomplished Luipa saw this and said to him, "You speak well! If I did not understand, I would be in great danger of being controlled, but now that I understand, I will not be controlled by him." Luipa said, "Your plan to look for flaws is like that. Do not be attached to all beautiful things." Having said that, he gave the command. Immediately after that, the yogi entered the gate of practice and diligently persevered day and night, six times a day, without distraction. After that, the joyful demon entered the hearts of some villagers and a beautiful woman, and controlled them. He entered the mandala of the yogi and, in a dream one night, disguised himself as the yidam deity and prophesied, "You will attain the supreme accomplishment from today onwards, and from tomorrow onwards you will attain the common accomplishment, and you will be liberated from the obstacles of demons. A consort with the marks will also appear, and even if you do not always rely on her, if you engage in union, you will attain accomplishment.
