This is from the teachings of Machig and the explanations in the instructional texts. First, Gangpa Muksang asked Machig: What is the difference in meaning between what is called a "demon"? Machig replied: "Child, listen, the characteristics of a demon are as follows. What is called a demon is not a real being that is large in form, black in color, and causes fear and dread to anyone who sees it. What is called a demon is anything that becomes an obstacle to achieving liberation. Therefore, even loving and caring relatives and friends can become demons of liberation. In particular, there is no demon more obstructive than arrogance and self-grasping. Unless these are cut off, all demons will be ready to take advantage. Therefore, one must be skilled and diligent in the methods of cutting off the demon of self-grasping. At the same time, one must also cut off the three demons that arise from arrogance or self-grasping. If they are named as four, they are: the demon with obstacles, the demon without obstacles, the demon of delight and attachment, and the demon of arrogance." That is to say, including the demon of arrogance and self-grasping, there are a total of four demons. Among them, the so-called demon with obstacles is when the eye sees a beautiful object and attachment arises, and when it sees an ugly object and hatred arises. Similarly, the ear, nose, tongue, and body, and their respective sensory objects, such as sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile sensations, when attachment arises to beautiful objects and hatred arises to ugly objects, this is called the demon of clinging to attachment and hatred. Because sensory objects are real, and due to attachment and hatred, the senses are actually obstructed, thereby harming sentient beings and becoming the cause of binding them to samsara, it is called a demon. Because it clings to real beautiful and ugly objects and becomes a demon, it is called a demon with obstacles. Therefore, any attachment and clinging to beautiful and ugly objects is a demon, so one should abandon attachment and clinging to anything. Because form is empty in its very essence. Child, form is also without inherent existence, therefore one should not have attachment and hatred towards form, but should meditate on its very nature of emptiness. The appearance of form cannot be denied, but it should not be grasped as real either, it is merely an appearance. By abandoning attachment to mere appearances, one is liberated from form, son of the lineage. Similarly, sound and sme

Similarly, tastes and tactile sensations are also. Keep in mind the origin of the obstructing demon, and how to be liberated from the obstructing demon, O rational one, it is like that. Son, listen, the unobstructed demon arises in this way, do not be distracted, keep it in mind. The so-called unobstructed demon, although it does not appear directly in the realm of the senses, any good or bad thoughts that arise in one's own mind, one clings to the terrifying feeling of "it is a demon" and feels afraid, and clings to the pure feeling of "it is a god" and feels comfortable and joyful. In this way, clinging to the two thoughts of good and bad in the mind, one becomes afflicted because of that. Although that affliction has no actual obstruction and is not established in the realm of objects, it can certainly cause harm by leading one to fall into non-virtuous actions, so it is called a demon. That is also because it is not actually established and has no actual obstruction, so it is called the unobstructed demon. Therefore, the mind that clings to the goodness called "god" and the evil called "demon," and to the two qualities, know that from the very beginning, not even a hair's breadth of a thing is established, so know that it is emptiness without root or foundation. Do not prevent the arising of feelings and so on that appear in the mind. Do not prevent the arising of various good and bad thoughts. Do not apply concepts to it, and do not rely on any arising thoughts and ideas, and do not be bound by thoughts. Because the nature of mind is vast and naturally luminous, whatever thoughts and ideas arise, just as waves arise in the ocean even without a stirrer. If you do not interfere with or modify any good or bad thoughts that arise in your mind, you will be able to overcome the unobstructed demon. By abandoning the grasping and the grasped of the mind, and leaving the body and mind still and relaxed in their natural state, the unobstructed demon is liberated in its natural state. Son of the lineage, the so-called demon of joy is when one's own mind clings to something, likes it, rejoices in it, and thus generates great joy. The causes of this are the perfection of worldly wealth, respect, and fame, the gathering of many retinues, seeing the face of the yidam deity, and subduing ghosts and spirits with the power of speech, pacifying sickness and pain, and having special experiences.
