There are four ways to sever the five poisons and three poisons of suchness As Machik said: Listen, this Dharma of mine must be divided into four aspects: outer, inner, secret, and suchness. First, the four objects of severance are: the object of outer severance is the distinction of dangerous places. The object of inner severance is diseases and evil spirits. The object of secret severance is conceptual thoughts and feelings. The object of suchness severance is the five poisons and three poisons, children. That's why it is said. That is, severing the fear of dangerous places, the clinging to harm from diseases and evil spirits, various conceptual thoughts, and being dominated by the five poisons. From the perspective of the method of severance: severing the clinging to the truth of outer objects is outer severance. Severing the clinging to the truth of inner appearances and mind is inner severance. Severing the cherishing and clinging to the truth of both body and mind in between is outer and inner. The third of non-duality is: Machik said: Outward appearances sever the images of objects, inwardly sever the clinging of the mind, and in between sever the clinging of both body and mind. It is because it is as said like this. The reason for establishing outer severance and so on in this way is that, for example, just as outer and inner dharmas are empty of truth and are labeled as outer emptiness and so on. From the perspective of the method of practice: practicing by going to dangerous places and solitary retreats is severance based on outer objects. Abandoning the body as food for gods and demons is severance based on the inner body. Severing the subtle channels or the single self-grasping from the root is the three severances of the meaning of practice. As it is said: Going to dangerous places and solitary retreats is outer severance, abandoning the body as food is inner severance, and severing the single self-grasping from the root is the severance of meaning. It is just as many wise and accomplished masters such as Jetsun Milarepa unanimously agreed. Dividing in terms of common and uncommon ways: transferring one's own consciousness into the dharmadhatu and visualizing giving the body to gods and demons is like the previous conduct of our teacher giving the flesh and blood of his body to yakshas and so on. Conforming to this conduct is the common path, the severance of the Sutra aspect. Visualizing one's own consciousness as the form of deities such as Krodhamata and transforming the body into any desired offering and giving it away is the uncommon path, which is related to the Tantra aspect.
