If asked, how should a disciple view the virtuous friend, the guru? It should be the same as how one views the Buddha, the Bhagavan. If his mind is like that, then goodness will always arise. That will become a Buddha who benefits all the world. Thus, the disciple should view the guru as One should view the guru as the actual Buddha, and thus it shows the benefits of the disciple's mind turning to good. In the Glorious Guhyasamaja Tantra: Bhagavan, how should all the Tathagatas and Bodhisattvas view the initiation master of the body, speech, and mind Vajra secret assembly of all the Tathagatas? Son of the lineage, one should view the mind of all the Tathagatas and Bodhisattvas as a Vajra. Why is that? The guru is equal to the mind of enlightenment and is non-dual. Thus, the three secrets of all the Tathagatas are assembled, and not only the disciples, but all the Tathagatas and Bodhisattvas should view the initiation master of the Glorious Guhyasamaja as the Vajra of the mind of enlightenment, which is a synonym for Vajradhara, and should be regarded as such. This also indicates the initiation of other tantras, and the initiation also indicates other gurus who teach the tantras, etc. Thus, in the Fifty Verses on the Guru: The guru and the Vajra-holder should not be regarded as different entities. Thus, the guru and Vajradhara should not be regarded as different in essence, but should be held as inseparable in essence. In the Jewel Cloud Sutra: Relying on the guru increases virtue and decreases non-virtue. Knowing that the Khenpo, whether learned or unlearned, whether knowledgeable or ignorant, whether observing the precepts or breaking the precepts, one should generate the thought of a teacher. Just as one has faith and joy in the teacher, one should also have faith and joy in the Khenpo. One should respect and serve the gurus, and through this, the unfulfilled accumulation of enlightenment will be fulfilled, and the untamed afflictions will be tamed. Thinking thus, one obtains joy and satisfaction, and one acts in accordance with the virtuous Dharma and does not act in accordance with the non-virtuous.

That is to say, one should generate the perception that the master appears to have both merits and faults. By doing so, one can complete the incomplete accumulations of enlightenment, and one can also obtain the merits of practicing virtue and avoiding evil. Furthermore, one should not merely think that the lama is not actually a Buddha, but one should visualize him as a Buddha. Because the Buddha is the true incarnation of all Buddhas. The Sutra of Salty Water and Land says: "At the end of the five hundred, I will dwell in the body of a teacher. You should think that I am that teacher, and at that time, respect that teacher." The Great Drum Sutra says: "Do not grieve, Ananda! Do not lament, Ananda! In the future, I will manifest as a virtuous friend to benefit you and others." The Sutra of Noble Samadhi says: "Son of good family, in the future, in the future age, I will also manifest as a virtuous friend and teach these samadhis. Therefore, the virtuous friend is your teacher, so you should rely on, respect, and serve him until you sit under the Bodhi tree." The Tathagata has personally promised to manifest as a virtuous friend to benefit sentient beings. From the beginning of the path of learning, one obtains the merits of having a very thin and long tongue because of the absence of the fault of falsehood. Therefore, it is impossible for the Buddha to lie. If one thinks that the Buddha might lie, then he is not a Buddha who has completely eliminated all faults. If someone asks: Even if he does not lie, did the Buddha not also speak various provisional and definitive meanings? Although this is generally the case, here it cannot be completely established as definitive, because it does not cause harm to reality, and there are scriptural and logical proofs as evidence. If someone says: There is harm to reality, because the Buddha has eliminated all faults and perfected all merits, while the lama is not like that. If one thinks like this, then the reason why the lama is not a Buddha is only because he appears to have faults in the eyes of others who are similar to himself, and there is no other reason. But this cannot be a correct reason, because our minds have been influenced by inverted and confused perceptions.
