Like following without anger, like a shadow, the mind like a boat, no matter how much it engages in the activities of the Lama, it does not tire of going and coming. As it is said in the Ornament of the Sutras: "With respect, gain, and service, one should rely on the spiritual friend through the door of practice." And: "Relying on what is taught, one makes the mind truly happy." Thus, with the respect of raising the seat and personally welcoming, and the gain of offering food and drink, etc., and the service of massaging and wiping, etc., and relying on the spiritual friend through the door of properly practicing the Dharma, and relying on the mind of enlightenment and whatever the Lama has taught, that is, how he has instructed. Thus, one should practice. By this method, the Lama's mind, that is, the heart, should be completely and exceedingly pleased and delighted. And as it is said in that very text: "One who uses the share of his Dharma is endowed with qualities. One should rely on the spiritual friend greatly, not for the sake of entanglement." That is, one should rely on the share of that Lama's Dharma because one is endowed with qualities. One should not rely on it for the sake of practicing entanglement, in order to make oneself wealthy. Furthermore, in Resting the Mind Itself, it says: "Always remember the qualities of the Lama, Do not think of faults, even if you see them, think of qualities. Since it is your own appearance, he does not have them. Think from the heart, and rely on confession, vows, and remedies. Abandon what displeases the Lama, and strive for ways to please him. Never break the Lama's commands, and treat the Lama's surroundings as you would the Lama. Do not gather the Lama's attendants and servants as students, Request teachings, empowerments, etc., and then act. In the presence of the Lama, restrain body, speech, and mind. Do not show a single leg or sit cross-legged with your back to the Lama. Do not be sullen, do not show anger. Do not speak carelessly, do not lie, do not slander. Do not speak of others' faults, do not speak unpleasant, harsh words. Do not speak of things that are unexamined and unrelated. Do not covet the Lama's possessions, Abandon all hatred and harmful thoughts. Do not misjudge the Lama's various actions and miracles with hypocrisy, but think, 'This is his nature, he is doing it himself.' Abandon slight contradictions, faults, and wrong views. Even if the Lama appears to be angry, be certain that you have a fault.

Confess and atone for sins on the ground. Meditate on the crown of the head and offer fervent prayers. Through this, please the Guru and quickly attain accomplishments. When you see the Guru, rise and prostrate. When seated, offer cushions and other necessary items. Praise with sweet words, join your palms. When departing, rise and attend to the Guru with reverence. Always remember, be mindful and cautious. Reside with respect, fear, and humility. Just like a new bride, Reside near the Guru with body, speech, and mind pacified. Do not be frivolous or reckless. Do not be partial, not for gain or arrogance. Do not be deceitful or hypocritical, Do not be two-faced, not with affection or hatred for near or far. If you have wealth, make offerings to the Guru. Serve with body, speech, attend with reverence, Abandon this life, please the Guru with practice. When others speak ill of the Guru, refute them. If you cannot, then contemplate the Guru's virtues. Cover your ears and accomplish benefit with compassion. Do not speak freely without relying on the Guru. Thus, this is a compilation of the ways to rely on the Guru as taught in the Tantras and the Fifty Verses on the Guru, etc. The other words are easy to understand. When you are in the presence of the Guru, if you need to give empowerments to others, etc., you should ask the Guru and not do anything without their permission. Do not frown or make angry gestures, and do not harm the Guru's entourage, disciples, benefactors, or any other groups, either in thought or in deed. You must refrain from doing so. When the Guru, out of necessity, engages in peaceful, wrathful, or worldly activities, do not mistakenly think that the Guru says one thing and thinks another, and that their words and actions are inconsistent, thereby engaging in inappropriate behavior. Do not speculate or judge. Do not think, "This is really not right, how can the Guru do this themselves," about actions that you do not like. Do not nitpick, thinking that the Guru's words and actions are inconsistent, thereby developing wrong views. If the Guru seems to be affectionate towards others and hateful towards you, do not think that it is the Guru's fault, but rather reflect that you must have great faults, examine carefully, and confess your sins.

If someone speaks of the guru's faults, if you have the ability, you should stop them. If you don't have the ability, you shouldn't think it's true. Instead, you should think of the guru's virtues again. Don't listen to those words, cover your ears, and think in your heart that you can't abandon the other person. You should want to help them with compassion, and you shouldn't be loving to them in body and speech, or say things that make them feel at ease, because that would be a root downfall. In short, in the "Fifty Verses on the Guru," it says: What need is there to say so much here? Do what pleases the guru. Abandon all that displeases the guru. Strive to do those things. Accomplishment follows the guru, the Vajra Holder said. Knowing this, with all things, make the guru completely happy. What need is there to say so much? There is no need to say so much. In short, you need to know what pleases the guru, and then put it into practice. You need to abandon everything that displeases the guru. That is what you need to do. Doing so also means that all accomplishments arise after pleasing the Vajra Guru, that is, following in walking, standing, sitting, and lying down. The Vajra Holder said this. Knowing this, with all things of body, speech, and mind, make the guru, the Vajra Guru, happy. You should do as he said. Third, the benefits of relying on a guru. In "Resting the Mind Itself," it says: The Buddhas of the three times and their retinues, the sangha of shravakas and pratyekabuddhas, the good friends who have attained the three bodhis, the high status of happiness obtained in the world, also arise from relying on holy beings. Therefore, people should rely on holy beings. This means that the rank of the Buddhas of the three times and their retinues, etc., is definitely good. Whatever the share of happiness of gods and humans, great or small, that is prominent in the world, all of it arises from holy spiritual friends. In the "Sutra Requested by Maitreya," it says: Whatever liberation of shravakas, pratyekabuddhas, and unsurpassed perfect Buddhas, and whatever aggregates of wisdom they possess, all of that should be known to arise from completely relying on good spiritual friends. Maitreya, furthermore, the benefit and share of happiness of sentient beings, all of that arises from one's own roots of virtue, and those roots of virtue should also be known to arise from good spiritual friends. Thus it is said.
