In the Hundred Treatises, it says: "An impartial, intelligent, and meaning-seeking listener is said to be a vessel." This means not being attached to one's own doctrine and not hating the doctrines of others, being without bias. If there is bias, it will obscure and not see the good qualities, so one will not find the meaning of the well-spoken words. It is not enough to be merely impartial; one must also possess the intelligence to distinguish between the path of well-spoken truth and the path of seemingly correct falsehood. Even if one possesses these two, if one does not seek meaning, one is not suitable as a vessel for the Dharma. Therefore, one must possess great diligence in seeking meaning. On top of these three, the commentary to that treatise adds reverence and trust in the Dharma and the speaker of the Dharma, making a total of five. In particular, in the Garland of Pearls Tantra, in the section on identifying the person to rely on, it says: "A person who remembers impermanence and death, A person who abandons this life with wisdom, A person who has faith in the Lama and Lord, A person who practices the sacred Dharma from the heart, A person who has great perseverance and cuts off attachment, A person who can stand firm in a solitary mountain retreat, A person who transforms adverse conditions into the path, A person who has no thoughts of non-Dharma, Such a fortunate person Should be shown the essence of the profound meaning." This means that this Dharma is taught to disciples who are capable vessels. To those who cling to permanence, pleasure, self, and purity, and despise others; to those who contemplate and judge the faults of the Lama; to those whose self-grasping and worldly concerns are especially strong; to those who lack perseverance and despise the Lama; to those who cannot stand firm in a solitary mountain retreat; to those who cannot transform adverse conditions into the path; to those who have many thoughts of non-Dharma; to those who do not believe in the Dharma and slander Dharma friends; to those who are attached to their homeland and relatives; to those whose afflictions, attachment, and hatred are strong; to those who treat the sacred Dharma as entertainment and practice casually; to those who boast of the sacred Dharma behind the Lama's back; to those who do not practice but only talk; to those who are without merit, this profound Chöd of the demons should be hidden. This means that the circumstances of being unsuitable as a vessel have been explained. Thus, the two circumstances of being suitable and unsuitable as a vessel have been explained. In the Compendium, it says, "A good disciple reveres the Lama," and so on. It also says, "Whoever is accompanied by evil friends and listens to the words of others is like an unbaked vessel that breaks when touched by water." This means that it has already been explained before. The meaning of the latter two lines is that if someone is influenced by evil friends and enjoys doing things that are not in accordance with the Dharma, and has a slight interest in the Dharma but listens to the words of others, that is, follows the words of others.

Those who follow later and whose minds are not firm are like unbaked clay pots, which are destroyed when touched by water if they have not been fired. This shows that they are not suitable vessels for the Dharma. Second, how to rely on the actual method, as stated in the Compendium of Trainings: "Therefore, those who seek the supreme Bodhi should have a constant mind, be skilled, and subdue arrogance. Just as patients rely on doctors to live, they should rely on virtuous friends without negligence." As stated in the sutra, in order to benefit others, one should seek the supreme Bodhi, the state of perfect and complete enlightenment, or desire to attain it, with a strong intention, not confused about what to accept and reject, skilled in this, truly knowing the qualities of the guru, subduing arrogance, having faith, and remembering kindness. Just as patients rely on good doctors to cure their diseases, one should follow the instructions, not be negligent in body, speech, and mind, respectfully serve, offer wealth, and so on. The way to rely on the guru is also as stated in the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra, one should learn by imitating the biography of Shri Jata (Glorious Birth). As stated in the Gaṇḍavyūha Sūtra, one should rely on the guru with nine kinds of minds, as described in the biography of the boy Shri Jata (Glorious Birth): like the mind of a virtuous son, just as a virtuous or intelligent son does everything according to his father's instructions, one should observe the guru's intentions and act accordingly; like the mind of a vajra, which cannot be shaken by demons and evil friends, and abandons false discriminations; like the mind of the earth, bearing all the burdens of the guru's activities without weariness; like the mind of a mountain, not being moved by any suffering; like the mind of a servant, willingly accepting all the guru's hardships without weariness; like the mind of a broom, abandoning arrogance and considering oneself inferior to the guru; like the mind of a rope, willingly taking on all the guru's difficulties and heavy burdens; like the mind of a dog, not being angry even when despised by the guru, for example, treating one's own dog, no matter how one beats or scolds it,
