Obtaining the Buddha's teachings, all merits depend on and rely on the virtuous spiritual friend. The fully enlightened Buddhas, who possess all the best qualities, have said so. Here, it explains the characteristics of the one who relies (the disciple), the characteristics of the spiritual friend to be relied upon, how to rely on them, and the benefits of relying on them, etc. The scripture continues, "Generosity, discipline, patience, diligence, as well as meditation and wisdom, completely dedicate to enlightenment. Do not cling to enlightenment as a substance, and do not grasp it as supreme." This is the teaching given to the initial practitioner. This statement also clearly shows the method of guiding the disciple onto the path, that is, how to teach the practice of the six perfections such as generosity, and completely dedicate it to perfect enlightenment, which is the guidance on the aspect of method. Obeisance, the so-called ultimate enlightenment that one desires to attain, do not cling to it and the substance of the aggregates such as form, do not grasp it as supreme or extremely real. This is an admonition to realize that all phenomena, represented by enlightenment, are without inherent existence, which is the guidance on the aspect of wisdom. One should teach the beginner who has the aspiration for enlightenment in this way. This shows that if it is related to the specific situation, it can well illustrate how to teach the key points of the practice of Chöd (གཅོད།). Because it can be understood through what has been said before. Explaining the method of relying on the guru in a slightly more detailed way has five aspects: the characteristics of the guru to be relied upon, how to rely on them, the benefits of relying on them properly, the faults of relying on them improperly, and the method of purifying pure appearances by viewing the guru as the actual Buddha. First, the general characteristics of a Mahayana virtuous spiritual friend are stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: "A spiritual friend is peaceful, disciplined, extremely peaceful, possessing superior qualities, diligent, rich in scriptures, understanding reality, skilled in speech, possessing loving-kindness, abandoning weariness, and relying on them." It is necessary to have these ten qualities, because as it is said in the scriptures, it is impossible to tame others without having tamed oneself, so one must first tame one's own mind. And the correct method of taming one's own mind is the three precious trainings.

Therefore, it is certain that, with the discipline of morality, one tames the mind by cutting off the pursuit of external objects by the senses, and based on the acceptance and rejection of what is right and wrong, one relies on mindfulness and awareness, and the mind abides peacefully in the discipline of meditative concentration, thereby achieving peace. Relying on quiescence that makes the mind workable, one achieves near-peace through the discipline of wisdom that arises from the individual analysis of correct meaning. With the special discipline of wisdom, one realizes the suchness of the selflessness of phenomena. Therefore, it is not enough to merely possess the qualities of realization encompassed by the three trainings; one must also possess the qualities of scriptural transmission, and therefore one must possess extensive learning of the three baskets and so on. Even if one possesses both scriptural transmission and realization, one cannot be compared to a disciple; one must possess even more excellent qualities. Therefore, these six qualities are qualities that one has obtained oneself, and the rest are qualities of leading others, of which there are four. Skillful in speech means being proficient in how to guide the stages and being good at conveying meaning to the minds of those to be tamed. Loving-kindness means that the motivation for teaching the Dharma is pure, not seeking fame or gain, but teaching with a mind of love and compassion. Diligence means having a steadfast enthusiasm for benefiting others. Abandoning weariness means not being weary of repeatedly explaining and being able to endure the hardships of explaining. Regarding the characteristics of a tantric guru, there are many accounts in the tantric scriptures, here is a summary of the key points. In "Resting the Mind Itself," it says: "Empowerment and vows, samaya are pure, The meaning of the tantras and oral instructions have reached the other shore of the ocean, Accomplishment in practice and activity, attainment of siddhis, The warmth of signs of view, meditation, conduct, and result has been obtained, Great compassion, skillful means, guiding disciples to ripen and liberate, The blessings of the lineage, like clouds, do not dissipate, Such a wise and accomplished, glorious guru should be relied upon." This is also similar to the previous content, explained as follows: The qualities of one's own mind-stream, obtaining empowerment, vows and samaya being pure, realizing the meaning of suchness, etc., obtaining the warmth of the signs of view, meditation, conduct, and result, are the qualities of realization. Being proficient in the meaning of the tantras and oral instructions like an ocean, having reached the other shore, is the quality of scriptural transmission. And the supreme deity of
