Because they do not understand the difference between external and internal seeking, they will become possessed by spirits and deceive students. Such evil teachers are certain to become the demons of their students. There are also cases where, due to differences in temperament and faculties, there is only external seeking and no internal seeking. There are also cases where there is only internal seeking and no external or secret seeking. Secret seeking is entirely like that. There are also cases where external and internal seeking do not arise, so it is crucial to understand their differences, which is a profound and special key point. Now that we have entered the degenerate age and the Buddha's teachings are declining, some teachers establish the teaching of "subduing with the flow of awareness," but they themselves have no realization from it, causing all the teachers and disciples to waste their lives on it, and many die ordinary deaths. Some teachers are content with a comfortable and relaxed state, and proclaim it as the highest form of contemplation to others, and remain stuck in that. Some teachers manifest bright experiences, seeing gods and demons, and a clear and bright mind, and they take pride in this and teach it to others. Some are content with the experience of non-thought, empty and clear, without change or memory, as if entering a state of stagnation, and teach this to others. Some are content with a state of non-fabricated, non-conceptual stagnation, and teach and introduce it to others as the highest form of contemplation. These people, because they have not realized the view of emptiness, are bound by the fault of not transcending the three realms, and therefore cannot see the path to liberation and omniscience. Some people spend their lives distracted and attached to tattered books and empty talk, and when death suddenly comes, they have not even a hair's breadth of fearless confidence, but are only attached to hearing and speaking. These people consider themselves to have gained great benefits and high status in this life. Attachment to the illusory appearances and mind of one lifetime, and attachment to heard knowledge and empty talk, are like being bound by golden shackles and rope shackles, with no difference. The object of attachment itself has no good or bad; whatever one is attached to is only the cause of binding oneself. First, one must broadly understand the key issues and history of contemplation, and finally focus on the essential practice, so that one does not fall into the pitfalls of straying and error, and can reach the state of complete liberation. This is the essence of hearing.

It has passed. Hearing many things, arrogance and self-importance increase. Everything seen appears as a place of wrong views and slander. There is not even a hair's breadth of faith and devotion in the mind. One thinks that there is no one like oneself, and one becomes arrogant and haughty, hating and despising others. Om! Uttering evil words, and when hearing or seeing someone famous being praised by others, a strong sense of arrogance arises. With a jealous mind, one attributes faults to those without faults, and one accuses those with virtues of having none. These are all instances of hearing turning into poison, planting the seeds for falling into the lower realms. Therefore, such a teacher should be examined from the very beginning and avoided rather than relied upon. Once a single verse of instruction is obtained, that lama should be regarded as an actual Buddha, and one should not do anything displeasing to him even for a moment. If one does, it is as if one has abandoned all the Buddhas of the three times. In that person's mind, realization and qualities will not arise, and accumulating merit will not bear fruit. Even if one practices deities and mandalas, nothing but harmful spirits and demons will be accomplished. The seeds of liberation will dry up and not bear fruit. The tree of omniscience will rot and not grow leaves. Even if one has received empowerment and three words of instruction, one should respect even a non-Buddhist Samkhya philosopher as the supreme lama and not change one's mind. When staying, meditating on the lama on the crown of the head is relying on the Three Jewels for refuge. When walking, meditating on the lama on the right shoulder and having the intention of circumambulating is far superior to circumambulating all the Victorious Ones of the three times. When eating and drinking, meditating on the lama in the throat and regarding the food as nectar, whatever is eaten will become a feast and a fire offering. When meditating and sleeping, meditating on the lama in the heart and mixing one's mind with the wisdom of the lama, one will experience the non-conceptual wisdom of the nature of reality, and special realization will arise in one's mind. When practicing, if one meditates on oneself as the form of a deity and protector, one will not deviate from the self-generation stage, and the supreme and common accomplishments and the vast activities will be quickly accomplished. Likewise, relying on the sacred lama without contradicting him is the key to conduct.
