Focus your mind on any form or letter and maintain it for seven days. Then, visualize a bright, shimmering five-colored light bindu in your heart, focus your mind on it, and maintain it for seven days. Some will experience great mental ease, clarity, and emptiness, remaining in that state without any conceptual thoughts, like an ocean undisturbed by waves. This is called the Samatha with characteristics. Some find their minds too wild with conceptual thoughts to control. And, discomfort, illness, and pain may arise in the heart, life-force channels, and so on. Some may experience fainting, dimness, and so on. These are uncertain occurrences for those with unstable minds, windy constitutions, and coarse minds. At that time, let conceptual thoughts relax on their own, and watch over and protect them with unforgetting mindfulness and unobscured awareness. Remaining without thinking of anything is called remaining in the nature of reality. The movement and arising of various conceptual thoughts is called movement. When any conceptual thought arises, recognize it with mindfulness and awareness without letting it become obscured; this is called recognition. Now, in order to prolong the time of remaining in the nature of reality, look at the movement, straighten your body, and keep mindfulness present. When you say this and practice in this way, you are not blocking all moving conceptual thoughts, nor are you letting them arise on their own. Rather, you are making them manifest with mindfulness and awareness. On this, strive continuously in all sessions and breaks between sessions, so that eventually all subtle and gross conceptual thoughts will subside into the expanse of emptiness, the nature of reality, and you will remain in an unmoving state, becoming stable. You will experience a bliss like the warmth of fire, a clarity like the breaking of dawn, and a non-conceptuality like an ocean undisturbed by waves. A state will arise that is experienced with attachment, that you cannot bear to part with, that inspires faith and strong desire. If you become attached to bliss, you will be thrown into the desire realm. If you become attached to clarity, you will be thrown into the form realm. If you become attached to non-conceptuality, you will be thrown to the peak of existence. Therefore, for those who have entered the path, this is an unavoidable sign of the path, but know that it is a place where you must never become attached. Furthermore, this is also called the self-arisen state of Samatha on the path. If you gain long-lasting stability in this, although there is the key point of gaining stability in the mind-stream, in this degenerate age, sentient beings...
