Knowing the nature of non-existence becomes a means of developing faith in meditation; deciding that the basis of all good and evil is emptiness; one's own face is obscured by one's own ignorance; and not knowing or realizing that the great emptiness of the basis is the play of samsara and nirvana, merely engaging in virtuous actions of body and speech, knowing that those obscurations cannot be purified, therefore, faith and trust arise in the self-arisen nature of awareness, thus there is a need to distinguish the eye of wisdom from dust. If one does not examine and know the benefits and harms of gods and demons and their like, merely upon the formation of the aggregates of self-grasping, the appearances of the six realms will arise continuously, therefore, meditation, view, focus, mixing, and drawing inward, etc., once one enters the holding of the mind, outwardly the magic of gods and demons will be evoked, inwardly the diseases of the body will be evoked, and secretly the various feelings of joy and sorrow in the mind will arise continuously. There, if one falls into the trap of conceptual proliferation by clinging to demons and clinging to evil spirits, one will become attached to them and deviate from the true path, thus falling into error, therefore, it is essential to determine this. Entering the door of the Chöd instructions, when practicing, one must also determine that the state of gods and demons is not other than one's own appearance, and knowing the state of no gods and no demons is the essence and main practice of the Chöd instructions, therefore it is extremely important; when meditating on the deity in the generation stage, if one grasps gods and demons as one's own continuum, one will deviate and fall into the path of delusion, therefore, for that too, this is supremely excellent. Furthermore, no matter which vehicle's door one enters, if one does not understand these key points, one will misunderstand gods and demons and good and evil as self-characterized objects, and one will surely fall under the control of delusion, therefore, be sure to determine it as the essence of the instructions and the nature of the path. Thus, if one does not know the nature of the absence of gods and demons, in the appearances of dreams, dreaming of monks, one grasps them as kings, dreaming of women, one grasps them as female demons, dreaming of children, one grasps them as local spirits, dreaming of frogs and toads, one identifies them as nagas and fierce spirits, all of these are merely illusions and not established as true, like dreaming of obtaining food, wealth, houses, etc., but this morning they vanish without a trace, the absence of truth naturally appears. Furthermore, in all villages,

In order to truly pursue (spiritual goals), one strives in town rituals and demon-subduing activities. Even during (demon-subduing), one attempts to deceive others with various actions and gestures of killing and taming demons. Although one strives to deceive others through various methods, doubts and fears about demons arise incessantly. Similarly, hopes for gods also arise, and because conceptual thoughts arise as enemies, various illnesses and sufferings also arise incessantly. Therefore, if one understands the principle of the non-existence of gods and demons, it is a profound and special instruction for cutting off conceptual thoughts. If one does not understand this key point, even if one finds a needle and thread, one takes it as an accomplishment from the gods and prays to them. Even if one's feet and hands are pricked by thorns, one takes it as the work of demons, and conceptual thoughts arise. Whatever suffering occurs is seen as caused by demons, and one's mind is filled with doubts. Because of the thought of clinging to demons, one forcibly creates demons, causing them to descend as life-threatening maras. Therefore, this is a profound and special instruction for turning away from the path of perverse Chöd. Thus, it was said. Furthermore, Manifestation Empowerment said: O Teacher, Blessed One, for all of samsara and nirvana, are there objects of hope and fear that are established as having their own characteristics, or are there not? Please, Teacher, reveal this. Thus, he asked. (The Buddha) replied: O Manifestation Empowerment, the so-called Buddha, the object of hope, is not established from the beginning, nor does it abide. If the Buddha has a body, is it not born from the conditions of parents? If that is so, then the Buddha falls into the extreme of birth. If the Buddha has pure lands, enjoyments, and retinues, then clinging to these is nothing other than the appearance of clinging to the self of phenomena. If the Buddha appears to have a body, then clinging arises from clinging to the self of the person. If one thinks that the Buddha ultimately passes into nirvana, is that not thinking that the Buddha dies and falls into the extreme of annihilation? If one thinks that the Buddha abides in the middle, then that is falling into the extreme of permanence. If one thinks that the Buddha teaches the Dharma to many other sentient beings, then clinging to the teacher as self, and to the Dharma to be taught, and to the disciples to be trained, and to all that appears and arises, is a great and terrible delusion of dualistic grasping. If one thinks that the Buddha is established in that way, then one is looking at the Buddha as a sentient being and is lost in the dark realm of wrong views. Furthermore, do not think that the Buddha has eyes.
