When all appearances of clinging are definitively settled, its essence is emptiness, becoming a vast, unobstructed expanse of space. The essence of emptiness without location is the ground. When the ground is recognized, it is known that all of samsara and nirvana are not different from the ground. Thus it was said. Again, the Bodhisattva Wisdom Vajra asked: "O Teacher, Blessed One, what is the manner of distinguishing between samsara and nirvana?" The Blessed One replied: "O son of noble family, The ground, when the radiance of the Sugata-garbha manifests as the great wisdom of clear depth, is called the Buddha abiding in the pure ground. When the radiance of wisdom is obscured by ignorance, and radiance and obscuration are mixed, it becomes the ground of all appearances, mind, happiness, and suffering, and is therefore called the alaya. Based on this, the dualistic conceptualizations that grasp at subtle and gross objects cause the three realms to accumulate in samsara." Thus it was said. Again, the Bodhisattva Wisdom Vajra said to the Blessed One: "O Teacher, Blessed One, what is the nature and quality of the pervasive, immovable king, called the ground Sugata-garbha? Please, Blessed One, reveal it!" Thus he asked. The Blessed One replied: "O great being, listen without distraction! The essence of all Sugatas condensed into one nature, the pervasive, immovable king, is unsurpassed, unparalleled, the profound, vast realm of Dharma, peaceful nirvana, free from attachment to all of samsara and nirvana. Because it is unborn and unoriginated, it possesses knowledge. The great vision of pure wisdom, pervasive and unobstructed, is opened by stainless wisdom, and therefore possesses sight. Such a ground, whose qualities are primordially complete, its liberation is as follows: It is not made good by good Buddhas, nor is it corrupted into evil by evil sentient beings. There is no ignorance. Because there is no ignorance, there is no alaya. Because there is no alaya, there is no ego-grasping. Because there is no ego-grasping, there is no self. Because there is no self, there is also no external object. Because there is no self and object, there is also no grasping. Because there is no grasping, there is also no consciousness. O son of noble family, the ground Sugata-garbha is unborn in the three times, and is therefore free from the extreme of birth. It never ceases to exist, and will not be extinguished into nothingness.

Therefore, it is free from the extreme of cessation; because it does not fall into the aspect of existence, of reality, it is free from the extreme of permanence; because it is not nothing at all, but is established as the common ground of samsara and nirvana, it is free from the extreme of annihilation; because there is no source of its initial arising, it is free from the extreme of coming; because there is no final place to go, it is free from the extreme of going. Because all of samsara and nirvana are not different from the nature of the basic Sugatagarbha, it is free from the extreme of otherness; because all the dharmas of samsara and nirvana appear distinctly and unmixed, it is free from the extreme of being of one meaning. O son of noble family, because the basic Sugatagarbha is all-pervasive and transcends all limits, it is the door to liberation, emptiness; because this basis cannot be indicated by any words, examples, or meanings, it is the door to liberation, signlessness; because the basic Sugatagarbha has self-confidence in itself, and has no longing for liberation arising from other results, it is the door to liberation, wishlessness. O son of noble family, all the kayas, speech, minds, qualities, and activities of all the Buddhas of the three times, the inexhaustible wheels of adornment, all arise naturally from the basic Sugatagarbha itself. That is to say, all the dharmas of samsara and nirvana are empty in the nature of the basic Sugatagarbha, uncorrected and naturally present, therefore it is Dharma; that Dharmata is not a mere void, but is spontaneously accomplished as if it were a collection of all wisdom and qualities, therefore it is called Kaya. In the nature of the basic Sugatagarbha, the kayas, wisdom, realms, and arrangements, the inexhaustible wheels of adornment, are all naturally complete as enjoyment, therefore it is called Sambhogakaya. In that, all wisdom and qualities are spontaneously accomplished as if they were a collection, therefore it is called Kaya. In the nature of such a basic Sugatagarbha, without moving, the Nirmāṇakāya that is naturally present and not different from itself, is therefore called Nirmāṇakāya. In that Nirmāṇakāya, the kayas, speech, minds, and inexhaustible wheels of adornment are spontaneously accomplished as if they were a collection, therefore it is called Kaya. Because the three kayas are not different from the essence, it is called Svabhavikakaya. Because it is complete as uncorrected and spontaneously accomplished, it is called Kaya. Because such four kayas are unchanging, they are called immutable, and because they are indestructible and possess the seven vajra qualities, they are called Vajra.
