Observe, if it is established as truly existent, then it is indestructible, indestructible, true, solid, stable, unobstructed in all places, undefeated in all places, it must possess the seven qualities of the fearless vajra. Just as a materially existent earth or stone is broken, crushed, and burned three times, and then scattered into the sky, causing it to vanish without a trace. Similarly, examine all things in this way, and with intense mental effort, destroy their appearance as vanishing into emptiness without a trace. Thus, where have all the appearing vessel and essence, the six realms, gone at night? Where have all the vessel and essence of the night's appearances gone during the day? If you think that these two are not the same in terms of truth and falsehood, then like this: Listen, all you retinues who perform magical illusions! Where did you reside in the year, month, day, and hour of your thirteenth year? What food did you consume? Who were your friends? What words did you speak? Observe what the meaning is! If the daytime appearance is truly established, then where are the parents and body of the person who abandons this world's body and goes to the next life? Where did they come from? Tell me! Thus he spoke. Bodhisattva Wisdom Vajra said: O venerable teacher, Bhagavan, all the appearances of day and night, all the appearances of this and that, are merely false paintings of pleasant and painful experiences. After he reported this, the Blessed One said: O son of noble family, it is just so. Third, examine the nature of the objects that appear as beneficial or harmful, thereby attacking the weak point of clinging to reality, like this: Where were all the roots of virtue accumulated in the past? Where do they reside? To whom were they entrusted? What is the manner of benefit? Similarly, one should also examine how sinful, non-virtuous actions bring about harm. Om (Tibetan: ཨོཾཿ, Sanskrit Devanagari: ओम्, Sanskrit Romanization: oṃ, Chinese literal meaning: Om)! Destroy with mental effort its disappearance into nowhere. All the harming demons and spirits, what is the source of their initial arising, the place of their intermediate existence, and what is the place of their final destination? By examining how harm is caused, one understands how there is no harm. The protecting deity is also like that, examine the basis of the place of its birth, existence, and going. If the deity is empty, then how does it protect the self that has substance? If the deity has substance, then where does it reside? If it is thought to reside on the mountain, then is it under the ground or is that mountain the deity?

Is it a stone? Is it a tree? Is it grass? Is it that mountain? By examining (Sanskrit Devanagari: परीक्ष्, Sanskrit Romanization: parīkṣ, Chinese literal meaning: examine) in this way, all joys and sorrows are merely deceptive experiences, just false drawings. Even the gods cannot protect, and there is no torment by demons and spirits. One should understand it as it is. Fourth, the collapse of the false cave of attachment to hope and fear, having strayed (Sanskrit Devanagari: विभ्रम, Sanskrit Romanization: vibhraṃ, Chinese literal meaning: astray) into self-nature in samsara and nirvana: Where do the pure lands and Buddhas, which travel from place to place, exist in the sky, space, earth, underground? If there is a king in a vast place, beautiful in form, auspicious (Sanskrit Devanagari: भद्र, Sanskrit Romanization: bhadra, Chinese literal meaning: auspicious) in color, happy and joyful, with many attendants, then he is merely a universal monarch or a god of the desire realm, without any superior qualities. If the Buddha has form, then he also has color. If he has form and color, then he also has consciousness. If he has consciousness, then he also has the six objects. If these exist, then there are also the twelve sources, so undoubtedly he is a sentient being. By examining (Sanskrit Devanagari: परीक्ष्, Sanskrit Romanization: parīkṣ, Chinese literal meaning: examine) intensely in this way, one should destroy the false cave of straying (Sanskrit Devanagari: विभ्रम, Sanskrit Romanization: vibhraṃ, Chinese literal meaning: astray) into the self-nature of the Buddha. Also, the object of doubt, the evil realm, the place called hell, where does it exist in the sky, space, earth, underground, above the earth, above the ground? Who is the blacksmith who hammers the red-hot ground? Where did those firewood come from? What are the parents and causes of those hell executioners? What is the reason why they themselves are not burned by the fire, but others are burned? Having tormented sentient beings with such hellish punishments, where will they go in hell as a result of their maturation? Where do the bodies of those sentient beings who are tormented by suffering there come from? Om (Tibetan: ཨོཾ, Sanskrit Devanagari: ओम्, Sanskrit Romanization: om, Chinese literal meaning: Om)! What are the parents and causes like? Nowadays, sentient beings die from just a small wound, but why don't the hell beings die after being boiled and burned for many kalpas (Sanskrit Devanagari: कल्प, Sanskrit Romanization: kalpa, Chinese literal meaning: eon)? Similarly, for the pretas, the head is like a large pot, the mouth is like the eye of a needle, the throat is like a horse's tail, the stomach is like a country, the limbs are like reeds, and there are many of them. What are their parents and causes like? In which direction and in which place do they exist? One should examine (Sanskrit Devanagari: परीक्ष्, Sanskrit Romanization: parīkṣ, Chinese literal meaning: examine)! Similarly, if one examines (Sanskrit Devanagari: परीक्ष्, Sanskrit Romanization: parīkṣ, Chinese literal meaning: examine) in detail all the places of the six realms of beings, one will be certain that it is just a manifestation of one's own confused mind, like a dream, and not truly existent. In this way, the false cave of clinging to the self-nature of places will collapse. Thus, the apprehended
