That which is called "Is it suitable, or what?" means: Is it suitable not to befriend me? "I have no merit, follow thus" means: Those who have not seen my merits, it is suitable not to follow. Who can follow like that, those who have affection for my merits? Those people should follow me. However, know that it is not appropriate to examine the discriminations of the unwise, which is the meaning of the verses such as "who". "To abandon me today is foolishness" means: Not reversing the cause of suffering, hindering the cause of happiness, that is me living in vain, and that is entirely caused by ignorance. Those faults should be manifestly destroyed, I should destroy that which has become the root of my sins. Companions for practicing Dharma are rare, because at that time no one encouraged ordination. This is the twentieth chapter, the Merchant Chief. The definite quality of practice is stability. "When that becomes prolonged" means: Practiced for a long time. It is connected with "having completely abandoned those desires." "Women are not even to be looked at" means: Generally, other ascetics, that is, women are never seen. "Arrogant with pride, or if not examined" means: If the other person is arrogant and haughty, despising me, or if without examination, that person harms me with violence. Literally, that is, both the arrogance that arises naturally from pride and that which arises without examination should be abandoned. "While oneself is alive, that is not completely abandoned" means: The other person is the enemy. Do not abandon oneself alive, one should depart well. Or, before oneself dies, do not abandon that enemy. The meaning is to combine it with one's own anger. "Still alive" means: Still slightly alive, that will soon be very good. "Alas, what have I done to please you?" means: Whether the master is pleased or not, what pleases me is not, but in order to pacify obstacles to my practice of virtue, etc., I have followed the path.
