Commentary on the Lineage of the Jataka Tales, by Viryasimha. Commentary on the Lineage of the Jataka Tales. Viryasimha. Herein lies the commentary on the Jataka. In the language of India: Jataka-mala-pancika. In the language of Tibet: Commentary on the Lineage of the Jataka Tales. Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! With the power of compassion, vast is the practice of skillful means, and with wisdom, seeing the very meaning of that, free from attachment. Not abiding in the two extremes, possessing qualities like an ocean, protecting all beings, to the Victorious Ones and their sons, I bow down. Whoever possesses great compassion that completely protects all beings, and is not utterly deluded in the activities of beings by wisdom, and is not utterly weary of engaging in the benefit of sentient beings with unequaled strength of diligence, and does not cling to his own happiness, and generally abides in mindfulness, that Bodhisattva who gathers the treasure of precious qualities is the nature of the two accumulations. By the practice of the six perfections, he completely perfects his own Buddha-dharma, and by transforming the very six perfections into the four objects of gathering, he ripens other sentient beings; this is the conduct of the sons of the Victorious Ones. In particular, the Thus-Gone One, according to the view of this teacher, the three—generosity, ethics, and patience—are the accumulation of merit, the two—meditation and wisdom—are the accumulation of wisdom, and diligence belongs to both. Shakyamuni also performed many such practices in the past. A portion of that was composed by the teacher Viryavarman. Which of the six perfections and the four objects of gathering are those the nature of? And what are the distinctions of the perfections spoken of by the teacher, the noble Asanga, in the Bodhisattva grounds? And a small portion of the meaning, such as the distinctions of skill in means, will be shown. Thus, Yungdrung Sherab Drak. Some say that this text is clearly not completed by the teacher, and there is a remainder. Thus, although there are branches related to composing, such as explaining offerings, praises, and necessary connections, at the end, dedicating the merit to enlightenment, etc., B

Because the complete act of adornment was not done, and although the first three pāramitās each have ten, the ten of diligence are also not complete, and because the treatises that are mainly about meditation and wisdom are not apparent, and because the first three are concluded with summary verses, but the last four do not have summary verses, so it is said, and it needs to be examined. Among them, the first ten explain generosity. Only about four, the second ten explain ethics. The third ten explain patience. Among them, the first of the first ten explains the generosity of the whole body. Diligence. The second is the supreme generosity of limbs, and in the nature of the visible dharma, the fruit is in the extensive commentary, the Jātaka of Prince Moon is diligence, the iron house and the buffalo are meditation, the bird and the mare are said to be wisdom, which seems reasonable. Obtaining greatness. The third is to explain the giving of meager enjoyment, and also extensively explain the same as the cause and the proper giving. Eyes. Again, obtaining eyes. The fourth is to explain that generosity is not robbed by demons. The fifth is to explain that one does not turn away from generosity because of few resources. The sixth is to explain that even if the support is low, one does not turn away from generosity, obtaining great wealth. The seventh is to explain that even if one does not completely hold enjoyment, giving does not run out. The eighth is to explain that relying on generosity, one ultimately obtains liberation. The ninth is to explain that one is not attached to the supreme enjoyment of rabbits and other animals. The tenth is to explain the difference between abandoning life and being skilled in means to abandon the sins of many others. These are in terms of each aspect, and can also be examined from other aspects. Furthermore, there are two types of material giving: body giving and enjoyment giving. The first is explained by four chapters, namely the first and second, the sixth and eighth. The remaining six are enjoyment giving. If in terms of the difference of which field to give to, the fourth and tenth are giving to the field of merit. The remaining are giving to the field of suffering. The difference of good explanation of all these ten is dharma giving, namely the first and
