To always think like that is perverse pride. The difference between manifest pride and perverse pride should be explained: without seed is manifest pride, and with seed is perverse pride. To speculate on everything is manifest pride, and to speculate on a little is perverse pride. Some say that arrogance that precedes seeing others as wrong from the view of self is perverse pride. Others say that elevating oneself with correct facts is pride, being young is excessive pride, and not being a holy person is pride beyond pride. Regarding the five aggregates of close grasping, thinking that I and suffering appear, thinking 'this is me' is the pride of 'I am', thinking that one has become great with small qualities is manifest pride, having a little pride because of taking up little, and thinking that one possesses the qualities of an evil person is perverse pride. The so-called aspect of pride is the distinction of pride. Among them, the first three are called dependent on view, and being widespread is being thoroughly imbued by view. Among them, thinking 'I am the best' is the aspect of excessive pride that depends on the view of the collection of destructibles. Thinking 'I am superior to equals' is from the characteristic of excessive pride. Thinking 'I am the same' is the aspect of pride that depends on view. Thinking 'I am not equal to equals' is from the characteristic of pride. Thinking 'I am inferior to others' is indeed dependent on view, it is the aspect of pride of view. Thinking 'I am inferior to those who are particularly excellent' is from the characteristic of a little pride. Thinking 'there is someone superior to me' is from the aspect of a little pride. Thinking 'there is someone like me' is from the aspect of pride. Thinking 'there is someone inferior to me' is from the aspect of excessive pride. Thinking 'there is no one superior to me' is from the aspect of pride. Thinking 'there is no one like me' is from the aspect of excessive pride. Thinking 'there is no one inferior to me' is from the aspect of a little pride. Therefore, it should be understood that these nine forms of pride arise from the three prides. These three

What are they? They are pride, excessive pride, and slight pride. Furthermore, this comes from the rule stated in the Sutra on Entering Wisdom, which is what is said immediately following "thinking 'I am the most excellent'" and "the aspect of pride," and so on. Regarding "in relation to inferiors, equals, and superiors," in relation to inferiors, thinking "I am the most excellent" is pride. In relation to equals, thinking "I am equal to the most excellent" is excessive pride. And in relation to superiors, thinking "I am the most excellent" is pride that is even more than pride. Some say that "pride that thinks 'I am'" and "wrong pride" are to be abandoned by seeing, and the rest are to be abandoned by seeing and meditation. To refute that, it is stated that all are to be abandoned by seeing and meditation. Stating "all" is to show that not only the rest, but also "pride that thinks 'I am'" and "wrong pride" are to be abandoned by seeing and meditation. In this way, because there are these statements by the elder Sudatta, one abandons the pride that thinks "I am" with regard to the five aggregates of clinging. This means that whatever is aimed at what is to be abandoned by seeing, those are to be abandoned by seeing, and the rest are those to be abandoned by meditation. Regarding "there is no certainty," here, there is no certainty that what is abandoned is never used, or that what is not abandoned is always used. For example, faith and so on, and sleep and the feeling of suffering, and the eyes and so on, even if abandoned, are still used, and even if slightly not abandoned, are not necessarily not used, like the all-pervasive afflictions such as killing. Regarding "because the object is a dharma to be abandoned by meditation," whatever is killing sentient beings and so on, those are to be abandoned by meditation, because they are aggregates of form and so on. Desire, hatred, and ignorance are also only aimed at what is to be abandoned by seeing, so they are to be abandoned by seeing, not aimed at what is to be abandoned by meditation. Those to be abandoned by seeing should also be looked at inwardly.
