It is said that when (suffering) is touched and one abides with great joy, extreme attachment, this desire grows from the feeling of pleasure. Here, "great joy" is said to be the subtle form of desire. Since "great joy" is also similar to the feeling of pleasure, the subtle form is merely similar, not the essence of power. The reason for saying "grows" is that it is not merely that. The meaning is that it is not the manifested state. If it were not so, it would be said that it grows from desire, not "grows." "When it lies dormant" refers to existing in the form of a seed. The questioner asks, why not show "it grows when awakened," but specifically want to say "lies dormant"? Here, it is not showing that it grows when awakened. If asked, then does desire grow from the feeling of pleasure? The answer is, it will grow from the future, not what is happening now. Or, this is said to be an approximation of the cause. Desire is the cause of the subtle form of desire, so the cause, desire, is approximately called the result, the subtle form. The Venerable Dharmatrata says that because that itself is not a present entity, this should not be examined. That itself is not the subtle form of the characteristic of being completely entangled. There is no fault in this, because the intention is to explain (phenomena) as cause and effect being inseparable, so it is shown in that way. The transformation from a child to youth is like milk turning into yogurt, it is a transformation from a child to youth, not like the transformation of milk or yogurt. This knowledge for definitely grasping the nature of the subtle form is ineffective, because this itself is not the growth of the nature of the subtle form, and it is not immediately determined. Since existence is the three realms, and the desire of desire is explained separately, because one does not understand the desire of existence, one asks, what is the desire of existence? If it arises from two realms, why is it made into one, and why is only this one made into one, and not other subtle forms? What is the reason for this? Because (the mind) looks inward, and the thought of liberation.

It is done to dispel (wrong views). The desire of the desire realm is mostly due to the tendency towards the object, so it arises because it looks outward. Those desires of meditative absorption, the reason for saying "mostly" is that it also shows that desire arises even for immeasurable palaces, etc., so "mostly" is said. Those desires in the form and formless realms, because they have the object of meditative absorption, arise because they look inward, therefore they are called "desire for existence." Therefore, some people say that these two realms are widely spread, and there, some people, in order to dispel the idea that it is liberation, whatever is born there is only existence, therefore it is said that whatever is born there is desire for existence. It shows that those who want liberation must be without desire for all existence. Only the body is existence, merely meditative absorption is not, what is shown is having a basis, the basis is the body. Because of being separated from the desire of desire, it shows that one does not enjoy the taste of desire. Therefore, that desire is called desire for existence, this is because, this of yours is desire for existence, not liberation, thus the idea of liberation will be dispelled. By saying the word "says," it is known that it is not dispelling the idea of liberation elsewhere, but because of saying the object of desire for existence. Sthavira Bhadanta says that one should slightly observe the difference between the meaning spoken in the sutra and the previous meaning, previously because it was the object of meditative absorption, so it was unified and said to be looking inward, therefore it dispelled the idea of liberation, and later it said desire for existence. But here, because it takes the body as the object, it is unified and takes existence as the object, so it says desire for existence, how can one say that there is no difference in meaning? Merely seeing the truths will abandon them, the word "merely" in it is for the sake of eliminating by cultivation. Whatever affliction slanders which truth, merely seeing it will abandon it,
