The Sarvastivadins, who are respected by many, disagree with non-associated subtle entities, so they ask: How is this known? To this it is said: If only things that are associated with the mind are subtle, then, regarding the statement that 'the path abandons them,' afflictions would arise simultaneously with the path. Due to wholesome and neutral minds, even if not Arhats, it would lead to the fault of trainees and ordinary beings being without afflictions. Moreover, since there are no non-associated subtle entities, without a cause, all entanglements would not arise. Acquired things cannot be the cause of it, because all sentient beings are no different from this, the arising of afflictions would be the same fault. It should not be considered that this exists, because some have more hatred and others have more desire, therefore, the so-called non-associated subtle entities do exist. The Vaibhashikas say: This also applies equally to all statements. Like the Sarvastivadins, the Vaibhashikas do not deny the past and the future, they consider the abandonment of the acquisition of past and future afflictions to be the abandonment of the path. The so-called non-manifest is that afflictions and the path cannot arise simultaneously. Not abandoning afflictions is because it is related to acquisition, because wholesome and neutral bind the mind-continuum, so it does not lead to the fault that non-Arhats are afflictions. It is not that only acquired things are the cause of afflictions, then what is it? There are also causes such as commonality of fate, etc., due to their differences, the differences of afflictions will also change. Furthermore, the statement 'subtle entities cause afflictions' will arise. If non-associated things also do so, then, if the mind is completely defiled by afflictions, previously non-existent good does not arise, and the good that has already arisen is completely lost, then because they are always close, good will never be observed. Like this, non-associated subtle entities will never exhaust the continuum of sentient beings.

Moreover, these also obstruct virtue, so virtue will never arise. This is an untenable reason, because everything said such as "the mind is the cause of affliction" is to show that it does not possess subtle distinctions, so it is an untenable reason. Because those who do not possess subtle distinctions do not acknowledge it. As for "only considered to be done by affliction," affliction is occasional. When it manifests, the mind becomes afflicted, so future virtue will not arise, and it will also degenerate from present virtue. Therefore, when it is not manifest, the arising of affliction and virtue is not contradictory. The elder Dusang said: The so-called "only considered to be done by affliction" should not be examined, because the intention of the Sangha leader is not fully understood. The intention is, if it does not possess subtle distinctions, is it contrary to the virtuous mind, or is it not contrary? Because it does not generate a virtuous mind and is not contrary, it should be examined whether it is all-pervasive affliction. Because it is the cause of affliction and all-pervasive affliction, it should be examined whether it is all-pervasive affliction. It is not because it is contrary to the virtuous mind, it is said to be the meaning of hiding other thoughts. The so-called "only considered to be done by affliction" means that it is not subtle distinctions, etc. Now this should be examined, is it that the author of the sutra does not understand the intention of the Sangha leader, or is it that the elders do not understand the intention of the author of the sutra? The Sutra masters say in detail, like what, that is good. The view of the Sutra masters is that abandoning everything including subtle distinctions is not contradictory to the sutra, but because it is the subtle distinction of desire, it is considered not to possess subtle distinctions and will be separated. In order to abandon that thought, it is said that subtle distinctions are neither equally possessed nor not possessed. As for "because it is not another substance," why? Because it is not the nature of another substance. As for "sleep," because it does not make its own fruit, the mind all-pervasive affliction, etc.
