Just like stupas that do not receive offerings, one should aspire to manifest merit solely from one's own mind, which is particularly devoted to their qualities. Giving and making offerings are not meaningless either, because the faith that motivates those actions is the most excellent. The faith that is contemplated in the act of giving and making offerings is the most supreme, because it is the very act of fully engaging body and speech. It is not the case that the mind and mental events become virtuous or non-virtuous based on whether they benefit or harm others, or based on the recipient. What then? It depends on whether they are in accordance with the root of virtue or non-virtue. If it were not so, then even giving clothes, food, and poison, etc., with the intention of harming others would become meritorious, because there would still be a recipient and an act of benefiting others. If it is said that "for a good field" and so on will appear extensively. The naked ascetics say that if one gives to robbers, etc., the result will become unpleasant, because the pleasantness or unpleasantness of the result of giving depends on the field. This statement of the naked ascetics is a faulty explanation, because in that case, even in a bad field, a pleasant result would arise. One should not say that the result becomes pleasant because of the field. What then should one say? One should say that the result is excellent. Just as killing, whether the field is good or bad, in all cases the result is unpleasant. Similarly, giving, whether the field is good or bad, in all cases the result is only pleasant. The difference in the field only causes the result to be large or small, or to have no result, but it does not cause the result to be unpleasant. "Immoral discipline is the form of non-virtue." This is because immoral discipline is the nature of body and speech. That is, from the act of killing, its preparation and completion, up to idle talk. Therefore, abandoning the form of non-virtue is discipline. Again, if one asks whether only abandoning immoral discipline is discipline, the answer is no, because the Buddha has established

O. Abstaining from prohibited actions such as eating at improper times, both types are also precepts. The so-called "receiving training" means that prohibited actions are not precepts of inherently immoral conduct. What is it then? It is that whatever is received as training becomes a precept of immoral conduct. The so-called "impure due to transgression" means that whatever is incomplete or impure. Briefly speaking about the precepts of immoral conduct, elaborately speaking, the precepts of immoral conduct are to deliberately contemplate and abandon downfalls. The cause of immoral conduct is afflictions such as attachment and near afflictions. The antidote to the afflictions and near afflictions that become the motivation for that precept itself is mindfulness, because it is in accordance with and beneficial to it, it relies on the antidote to immoral conduct. The so-called "purified by the path of action" means that it has not been defiled by engaging in paths of action such as killing. The so-called "purity of near completion" means that even the near completion of the path of action has not been engaged in at all. The so-called "not even arising with discriminations" means that it has not been tainted by non-virtuous things such as discriminations of desire. The so-called "completely grasped by mindfulness" means that mindfulness of the body and so on has been firmly established. The so-called "without livelihood and without division and severance and fear of bad destinies," the word "fear" should be applied individually from the fear of no livelihood to the fear of bad destinies. The so-called "attachment to existence and enjoyment and honor," the word "attachment" should be applied individually, that is, attachment to existence, similarly attachment to enjoyment and attachment to honor. Conformity with the limbs of enlightenment means having the meaning of the basis of tranquility and insight. The so-called "correct views are for the sake of liberation" is to refute the non-Buddhists, who, although seeking liberation as their goal, do not have correct views.

"Because of being without stain" means because of being free from the stain of afflictions. In "That virtue of equipoise," the mention of "equipoise" is to prevent the virtue of non-equipoise. The mention of "virtue" is to prevent the enjoyment that is similar to equipoise. "Whatever is the nature of samadhi and arises together with it" means the nature of samadhi and what arises together with samadhi. "Very much" means although it is not equipoise, it is still cultivated, but it is not like equipoise. To show that, it is said, "Because the continuum of qualities makes it its essence." "Like sesame seeds infused with flowers" means, for example, just as flowers are used to infuse sesame seeds in order to make them the essence of the fragrance of flowers. The sutra says, "Four people generate Brahma's merit," which means that building a stupa of the Tathagata's relics in a place where it has not been built before generates Brahma's merit. Offering a monastery to the Sangha of monks from the four directions, building a temple in that monastery, and setting up a constant alms-food offering there generates Brahma's merit. Reconciling hundreds of thousands of Sangha members generates Brahma's merit. Only having a mind of loving-kindness, from having no equal up to all the worlds, believing, distinguishing, perfecting, and abiding generates Brahma's merit. In "Corresponding to the share of merit," the fruit of merit is merit, and there are those who say it this way. One should contemplate, "Merit is fragrance, merit is wind." Its share is attainment, which is the aspect of merit that benefits it, and the aspect of merit is what corresponds to the share of merit. In "Just like corresponding to the share of Dharma," there are three shares: merit, non-merit, and immovability. Among them, others say that only the share of merit corresponds to the share of merit, in merit.
