A monk by name is one who is merely named a monk. A self-proclaimed monk is one who has broken the precepts and vows, 'I am a monk.' A monk by begging is one who begs for food. A monk by destroying afflictions is one who is free from desire in the three realms. This meaning refers to what the Blessed One said, 'Not a monk, not a renunciate.' A fully ordained monk through petition and four karmas refers to the manifestation of an ordinary being abiding in discipline, other than the four mentioned earlier. If someone says, 'It was spoken with the true monk in mind,' the reply to that is, 'Before that,' meaning before committing a transgression. The Vaibhashikas think that one can fall from what has not been attained. As it says in the sutra: 'In the world with the gods, behold the complete loss of wisdom.' So it is said. What was said was also spoken with the true monk in mind, 'not a monk.' Even if one side of the root is missing, it is explained extensively. The Vaibhashikas think, 'That example has no power.' So they say. Likewise, all four of these bases of training are like the top of a palm tree. If one transgresses any one of them, one should not give up the vows, because one sees that even if one side of each palm tree is missing, the other side remains. If each one is like that, then even if one transgresses them, one does not give up all the vows. Again, it is said that one will not give up because one has not transgressed the three that are like the top of a palm tree. What is the need for this? Therefore, here we speak of the power of the meaning of this example: even if one transgresses other bases of training that are like branches and leaves, one can confess and obtain those vows again, but if one transgresses any of the four that are like the top of a palm tree, one will not obtain the vows again. Therefore, there is no definite entry, and therefore there is no shamatha and vipashyana that rely on and abide in discipline. Sredana.

It is like having chaff, making it unusable. The so-called rotten wood is rotten wood. The so-called without essence is that there is no essence inside the grain. Here, a bhikkhu is also similar to craving and so on because he has the appearance of a bhikkhu and has no essence in his heart. Just as craving and so on make the wheat and so on with essence unusable, thus removing them from those, similarly, he also makes the Sangha of bhikkhus with essence unusable, thus removing them from those. Therefore, victory through the path is nirvana, as it is said: I have overcome sinful dharmas, therefore I, the near one, am victorious. The path shower is the one who shows the path. Some say that living by the path is the learners and non-learners. Others say that the learners and non-learners are victorious through the path. Living for the sake of the path is a bhikkhu with morality, because it is living for the sake of the path. The one who ruins the path is a bhikkhu with broken morality, and the example given here is this. In the Vinaya, it is said that he is not a bhikkhu and not a śrāmaṇa, but here it is also said to be a śrāmaṇa, so it should be understood that it is said not to be a bhikkhu with the true bhikkhu in mind. The reason for only the appearance remaining is the reason for only the mark of a śrāmaṇa remaining. All the virtues belonging to meditation are those that include the nature of tranquility and other aggregates that are not the nature of form. Above or below means that one first arises above and then abandons the lower; one first arises below and then abandons the upper. Completely falling away from absorption means abandoning whatever is obtained in the form and formless realms, because it depends on absorption. Abandoning the similar will also abandon a little, which means in the state of ordinary beings, the warmth and so on that correspond to the determining part, up to the middle forbearance. Here, abandoning the similar is death. A little is that which corresponds to the part of decline, and even being free from desire will abandon it as it is. One will abandon the previous path.
