That is because it necessarily arises from having attained the second dhyana, but regarding the places of samadhi, the trust arises that "it necessarily arises from them," and that is the extreme inner clarity here. Precisely because of that, although faith is present at all times, it is only in the second dhyana that it is established as a limb. The confusion of investigation and analysis together is also because equanimity is the main thing in these first and second dhyanas. Uparata Prabha Vasubhoga Sya Hi Shraddha Balavati Bhavatyalpa Bhoga Sya Tu Beshah. Others say that investigation, analysis, and samadhi, etc., are not other entities, and extreme inner clarity is also not another entity. Regarding that, the state of the mind's speech being completely aroused is investigation, and the state of not (being aroused) is analysis. The state of not being distracted is analysis. The state of being completely pacified is extreme inner clarity. If there is no other entity, then how is it? This is explained extensively. Mental factors exist in the mind, but it is unreasonable for the mind itself to become a mental factor. Not only are they other dharmas, but the difference in the state of being in the mind is also said to be a mental factor. This is not the conclusion of the treatise, that investigation, etc., are not other entities, or that the difference in the state of the mind is a mental factor. It is explained extensively in the Sutra of Transformation, that is, in the Sutra of Transformation it says that the five faculties are the faculty of displeasure, the faculty of suffering, the faculty of pleasure, and the faculty of equanimity. Monks, having arisen from the faculty of displeasure, (the faculty of displeasure) has arisen, and they know it as it really is. Regarding that action (what is done), they also know as it really is the result that is combined with the cause, combined with the condition, combined with the aspect, and combined with the basis. From "what is the cause of which actions" to "how many are the causes of those actions that arise from the faculty of displeasure," and from "which actions have unstable causes" to "how many arise depending on unstable causes and conditions," and "from where does the faculty of displeasure become permanent," etc.

I. When the feeling of discomfort arises, constantly abiding in following observation, as well as following observation of the view of meditation, following observation of cessation, following observation of individual transformation, and the mind dwells closely on this. Wherever it arises, all feelings of discomfort cease, subside, and are completely cut off. And from wherever the feeling of discomfort arises, all cease, subside, and are completely cut off. Here, a monk, having attained and abided in the first dhyana by being secluded from desires, and so on, all feelings of discomfort cease, subside, and are completely cut off. Monks, this should be called definite liberation. From this, it arises up to equanimity. As previously stated, those limbs, namely, the first dhyana has five limbs, the second has four, the third has five, and the fourth has four. It does not change in all (meditations), because it is not separated from afflictions. That is to say, because it corresponds to the afflictions of its own ground. What is stated here is not merely the joy that is shown by accomplishing separation. What is it then? It is also what arises from not being separated from the afflictions of one's own ground. Thus, why is it said to be separated from desires and separated from sinful, unwholesome dharmas? What is the need here for the word that says joy and happiness arise from separation? Because it arises from being separated from the afflictions of one's own ground, joy can also be known here. Therefore, joy and happiness are shown together as a pair. How is it known that the joy that is associated with extreme pliancy is a limb of meditation? Because extreme pliancy is entirely virtuous, it is not present in those with afflictions; at that time, there are only three limbs. Because it is oppressed by afflictions. This means that it is extremely distrusted by the afflictions of its own ground. For those with afflictions, faith and extreme pliancy are not its limbs; in the second meditation, those with afflictions do not have the limbs of faith and extreme pliancy.
