It is said in the scriptures that the limbs of enlightenment, and since the limbs of enlightenment are all without outflows, it is also believed that these are without outflows. Because it corresponds to the limbs of enlightenment, extreme taming is said to be a limb of enlightenment, but not in a real way. If it is said that the absence of outflows is the same, because it corresponds to the absence of outflows, it is without outflows, but not in a real way. As many eyes as there are, as many forms as there are, as many eye consciousnesses as there are, similarly extending to as many bodies as there are, as many touches as there are, as many body consciousnesses as there are, this contradicts the previous statement, because touch and body consciousness are said to be with outflows, so it is not other, thus extensively speaking, there is no contradiction. Other than that, touch and body consciousness do not encounter pleasure and joy, because pleasure and mental pleasure do not exist simultaneously, because body and mind consciousness do not arise simultaneously. Therefore, it will not become the five dhyana limbs. No, because it is shown to exist, this does not contradict the showing of the five limbs, because it is shown to exist. Just like investigation and analysis, for example, although investigation and analysis do not arise simultaneously, they are said to be with investigation in terms of existence. If it is said that it needs to be proved, investigation and analysis enter sequentially. Is it necessary to prove that they do not exist simultaneously? Or, these five exist in kind, so they are five limbs, but not because the five exist simultaneously, is this what needs to be proved? This is established, because the coarse and subtle aspects of the mind arise after destroying each other, so it is impossible to exist simultaneously, and the differences between coarse and subtle and types are also interdependent, so investigation and analysis will exist up to the peak of existence. The difference in the types of coarse and subtle is not allowed, this has already been extensively explained before. Therefore, what are the five limbs that exist in the first dhyana, namely investigation, analysis, joy, pleasure, and samadhi?

Those are produced only from the two, three, and four branches of dhyana. Among them, the two-branched dhyana refers to the second dhyana, because there is no seeking and analysis there. The three-branched dhyana refers to the third dhyana, because there is no joy there either. The four-branched dhyana refers to the fourth dhyana, because there is no pleasure there either. Precisely because of this, they are considered the culmination of dhyana. Even though there are other mental events in the first dhyana, only five branches are mentioned, not feeling, etc. It is not that higher dhyanas are established after abandoning feeling, etc., because they exist in all dhyanas. Therefore, they are not said to be branches in the first dhyana. Or, why is that? If you don't want to understand it this way, you should state other reasons. If it is said to be for benefit, that is, because feeling, etc., are beneficial to seeking, etc. Another explanation is that mindfulness and wisdom are beneficial. Mindfulness and wisdom are not as beneficial as seeking and analysis, because mindfulness abides well and knows things as they are without agitation or dullness. Because both mindfulness and wisdom are beneficial, but they are not said to be branches, seeking, etc., are not said to be branches of the first dhyana for the sake of benefit. What then? It is in order to establish the second dhyana, etc., from the two, three, and four branches of dhyana. Some people refute in this way, which shows that they themselves do not understand. The previous teachers said, in detail, that all these manifestations are not branches, because they are accepted by the elders of their own school. The so-called "the continuum runs very peacefully" means that previously the mind was not focused on the object because of the disturbance of seeking, etc., but now, because it is free from seeking and analysis, the progression towards the object has become one, which means abiding very, very evenly. Extreme joy is faith.
