In the third and fourth dhyanas, there is no difference between equanimity and mindfulness. In all four, there is no difference in samadhi (ཏིང་ངེ་འཛིན་,梵文天城体:समाधि,梵文罗马转写:samādhi,汉语字面意思:等持). Therefore, it is said: Are the limbs that are in the first dhyana also in the second? There are four possibilities: the first is investigation and analysis, because they are only in the first dhyana and not in the second. The second is "inner purity," because it is only in the second and not in the first. The third is "joy, happiness, and one-pointedness of mind," because they are in both. The fourth is "dharmas other than those that have been explained," meaning that whatever dharmas are other than those that have been explained are neither limbs of the first dhyana nor limbs of the second. Similarly, all the limbs of dhyana should be combined with each other. This means: Are the limbs that are in the first dhyana also in the third? There are four possibilities: the first is inner purity, joy, and happiness. The second is equanimity, mindfulness, awareness, and happiness. The third is samadhi (ཏིང་ངེ་འཛིན་,梵文天城体:समाधि,梵文罗马转写:samādhi,汉语字面意思:等持). The fourth is dharmas other than those that have been explained. Neither pleasure nor pain, but a feeling that is neither, and a completely pure equanimity, and a completely pure mindfulness. The third is samadhi. The fourth is all dharmas other than teachings. If you ask whether the limbs that are present in the third dhyana are also present in the fourth dhyana, there are four possibilities: The first possibility is the limbs of the third dhyana other than samadhi. The second possibility is the limbs of the fourth dhyana other than samadhi. The third is samadhi. The fourth is all dharmas other than teachings. Assuming that there is pleasure in all three dhyanas, the question is asked: Why is the pleasure in the third dhyana said to be a different substance? Is it thought that it is not present in the second dhyana? And how is the pleasure in the third dhyana said to be a different substance? Because in the third dhyana it is said that there are equanimity, mindfulness, clear comprehension, and pleasure. In the first dhyana it is said that extreme joy is pleasure, and there are two kinds of pleasure: the pleasure of extreme joy and the pleasure of feeling. In the first and second dhyanas of equanimity, it is explained by the limb of the pleasure of extreme joy, but in the third dhyana, the pleasure of feeling is explained as a limb, therefore the pleasure of the third dhyana is said to be a different substance from the pleasure of the first and second dhyanas. kima bu niḥ kārāṇi sarvatra brasrabhyu baśe sānni hya dhyā dvayo rādhyānayoḥ prasrabdha rigatvam. paścimayo rupakṣayo riti. tathā yogāda prīti sukhe hi triśṇa pyatvā du beṣeta byekāma bitarka bicāra saṃjñā śalya kalpatvat. prasṛ bha yita byāprabhūta tara daṣṭhaulya nutpatayata yor bā bhūmyor ba baśarutvat. pratipakṣa lābhe prapravṛttir utkaṭā bhavati. tṛtīya caturtha yostu dhyānayor biśudha taratvād upakṣotkaṭaḥ pratipakṣo bhavati. prapravṛtti sukhamahi bhagavatā raṇa sādharmma ṇabhūmyuttara gatccheteḥ parijayārgandha vada byaṣṭha bhavati. anābhoga vāhitvattu śānta taratvat. bhūmī nāmu beṣa tpaśata tara bhavatīti. Because there is no basis for pleasure, it is said: Is that of the body or of the mind? Both.

Then it is impossible. The five consciousnesses of the body arise together with the body. When entering into meditative absorption, eye consciousness and so on do not arise at all, because they are directed outwards. Then mental happiness is also unreasonable. Why? Because there is the saying of "joy." Then whatever mental happiness exists is called "joy." If one thinks that joy is only another dharma other than feeling, and happiness is the tranquil feeling that exists in meditative concentration, therefore it is said that joy is mental happiness. Joy certainly cannot be understood as separate from mental happiness, and happiness and mental happiness do not exist simultaneously, because the nature of two feelings cannot exist equally in one mind. Those two are called different names, namely happiness and mental happiness. Because there is the saying of "five limbs," if happiness and mental happiness arise in the form of different names, then it will only become the fourth dhyana, not the fifth. Because there is not one of happiness and mental happiness in each moment. Others say that the sense faculty of happiness arising from the mind does not exist, the sense faculty of happiness only exists in the body, not in the mind. The tranquil feeling of the mind is the sense faculty of mental happiness. If the sense faculty of happiness is not of the mind, then how is it established as a limb of happiness in the third dhyana? Therefore, it is said in detail that even in all three dhyanas, the happiness of extreme pliancy is not a limb in the first two dhyanas, and the third dhyana is not mental happiness, then what is it? It is said that in all three dhyanas, only the happiness of the body is established as a limb. Then, this statement from the sutras contradicts the statement that the mind does not have a sense faculty of happiness. How does it contradict? Because like the body, the happiness of the mind is also said to be the sense faculty of the mind itself. Some say that that statement is fabricated, which one is fabricated? It is the statement "arising from the mind." It is said to be fabricated, not the canon, why is that?
