Therefore, generating the thought of practicing yoga, and the same cause follows, it becomes the consciousness of great joy and the consciousness of extreme joy. From this, the thought of "nothing exists" arises, and the practice of equanimity is accomplished. Therefore, from the vast and boundless sphere of nothingness, the desire for solitude arises. For this reason, the sphere of nothingness is called the supreme equanimity. Why? Because the infinite aspects are manifested there, the mental events spontaneously arise and abide. It is called "because the consciousness is small," that is, because the consciousness is small, because the activity is not clear, it is the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, and it abides there as if there were no perception. This is not like the seven samadhis where consciousness is eliminated, nor is it like the samadhi of non-perception, non-perception, and cessation, where there is no consciousness. Therefore, it is called the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. If one asks, if one practices in this way, is it not impossible to proceed through that path? In that case, one should practice well in this way. Consciousness is a disease, this is explained extensively. Therefore, if one says, "In that case, also like this," and so on. Why? Because they hold onto it in this way, this is explained extensively. What is the cause for those who are disgusted with consciousness and non-consciousness to generate the thought of the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception? The answer is: Because the consciousness is small, it is necessary to state that as the cause, so it is also explained here. Because the spheres are wrapped around the body, and because they are wrapped extensively, they are called the formless spheres. That is also because karma and afflictions themselves generate the spheres, and because of existence and non-existence. It is called the main practice because it does not depend on others, or because it is the basis of all other samadhis. The phrase "those that are similar to tasting flavors" means that those that are similar are the definite substance of samadhi.

Thus it is said that the substance of entering into samadhi with its retinue is determined as such. The retinue is said to be together with savoring, thinking that desire has made the fruit one. Although meditation is associated with other afflictions, why is the association that is similar to savoring said to be afflicted, but not the association that is similar to other afflictions? It is said that meditations are only said to be associated with existence because they are well distinguished by their connection with objects. Other afflictions do not connect objects and mind in the same way as existence. It is because of entering through the gate of savoring, and because of closely realizing the object like samadhi. Worldly virtue is called virtue because it is not associated with the stain of afflictions, and because it possesses virtuous qualities such as non-attachment. (Tibetan, Sanskrit Devanagari, Sanskrit Romanization, Chinese literal meaning) ཏཙྩོཏ་ཏ་ཀུ་ཤ་ཡ་ཏནྣཱ་པཱུརྦི་ཎ་བིཥྚཻ་བཱ་ཤྲ་པ་ཏྭནྣནྟ་རེ་ཎ། (taccotatakusayatanāpūrvīṇaviṣṭairvāśrapatvannantareṇa) What is called savoring is pure savoring. What is said to arise from that is said to arise from virtue. What savors is the association that is similar to savoring, and to that is entering into samadhi. The association that is similar to savoring has five types of arising: from existence, from moment, from aspect, from object, and from dissimilarity. There, after the first dhyana is the entering into samadhi of the second dhyana. Arising from that is one that is associated with the first, with the aspect, with the object, and with the continuum. Arising from the moment is the aspect of suffering and so on after the aspect of impermanence, and the aspect has arisen, after the object of the aggregates of form and so on is the object of the aggregates of feeling and so on, and arising from the object, after the contaminated is the uncontaminated, and from the uncontaminated it is directed to the contaminated, after the afflicted is the unafflicted, and after the unafflicted are the afflicted and so on. Considering the aspect of arising from dissimilarity, it is said that arising from something that is to be savored, that which savors is not entering into samadhi. Also,
