All places do not have the same power. Therefore, even though there are many samadhis, it will not follow that all minds become one-pointed. Only samadhi has the ability to continuously engage the mind and mental factors in virtue, and therefore it is called dhyana (meditation), not everything is. If it is said that only one-pointedness of mind is samadhi, then others say that only the mind has one basis and object, so the power of other minds arising does not exist in one-pointedness, but other mental factors other than the mind are samadhi. The source of this is the Sutra, which extensively mentions "higher training in mind." Because the Sutra says that the higher training in mind and the main thing of completely purifying the mind are the four dhyanas. Therefore, dhyana should not be understood as something other than the mind. What is it then? Only one-pointedness of mind is dhyana. Therefore, samadhi is not other than the mind. For example, higher training in discipline is discipline itself, and higher training in wisdom is wisdom itself, and it is not other than that. Similarly, it can be understood from that very Sutra that the main thing of completely purifying discipline, the main thing of completely purifying views, and the main thing of completely liberating are also not other than discipline, views, and liberation. Similarly, the main thing of completely purifying the mind is also not other than the mind, as understood from the Sutra. If so, then if dhyana is the nature of samadhi, then would it follow that all samadhis have the nature of dhyana? That is, would it follow that virtuous samadhi, afflicted samadhi, and unspecified samadhi all become dhyana? It is not so, because the text elaborates on "having excellence." It means that only the samadhi that has excellence is named dhyana, but not just samadhi itself. Therefore, it will not follow that all samadhis become dhyana. It is like the sun, only those things that appear to be bright in a place are called the sun. Fireflies and so on are not.

It is not the sun. Because it arises in a combined way, it is called "arising in a combined way." Combination is joining, which is synonymous with "connection." Like necks linked together, it is combination. Because it arises naturally in a combined way, it is combined and arises naturally, which is synonymous with the simultaneous natural arising of tranquility and insight. The thing that arises naturally in a combined way is precisely entering naturally in a combined way. If a virtuous mind focused on one point is meditation, then how is it possible to have an afflicted feeler? It is because of wrongly determining thought. Feelers and others who grasp at the world as permanent, and so on. What if it becomes too extreme? It means, if all afflictions are wrongly determined to be thought, then it would become too extreme to be meditation itself. No, it is only similar to it, which will be explained in detail. If it becomes too extreme, similar to it, many characteristics are not inconsistent, because the afflicted meditator is named that name. Like a rotten seed. It is not the seed itself, stones and so on are not called rotten seeds. Then what is it? It is like saying it only of the fruits of grains and so on that are similar to it. Unwholesome meditations are also spoken of, which are those completely entangled with the desire of craving. Under the control of being completely entangled with the desire of craving, one thinks, one thoroughly thinks, which is widely manifested. Therefore, it does not become too extreme. Virtuous meditation refers to most cases. Like smoke and fire. For example, if it is said that there is smoke here, then fire is also spoken of, because without fire there would be no smoke, so they act together. Similarly, by speaking of investigation, conception is also spoken of, because they act together. Special meditation is, because there is investigation without conception, so after welcoming the doubt, without conception, this will appear extensively. Special meditation is, because there is no joy and pleasure, so investigation with joy and pleasure is meditation.
