Correct thoughts and so on are also not the path, because of seeing (the truth) correctly alone. If it is thought that correct thoughts and so on become the path from imputation, but not from the ultimate truth, then if that is so, correct view is also a limb of the path from imputation, but not from the ultimate truth. It is thought that the limbs of the path will become eight limbs, but from the ultimate truth, they are eight limbs. Because all do not possess the limb of their own nature, they are only seven limbs. Mārgasyanavinivarta ( मार्गस्य न विनिवर्त ) is not the opposite of the path, because it is not. canyata kiñcidyāpa deśyate ( चन्यत किञ्चिद्याप देश्यते ). yasyatānyāṣṇīgāni syuriti ( यस्यतान्याष्णीगानि स्युरिति ), except for ignorance. The so-called "is able to carry, able to receive, able to declare, immature," that is, having doubts about the Three Jewels, and those who have wrong thoughts, possessing a few other vows, how do their vows become eight limbs? It does not arise. If someone does not take refuge because of ignorance, or does not take refuge because of wrong thoughts or doubts, then even if they have not taken refuge, the vows of the lay devotee will arise. The term "householder" is a teaching term. The term "wearing white clothes" is an explanation. The term "male" is a teaching term. The term "possessing male genitals" is an explanation term. The Kashmiris say that without vows, one will not become (a monk), just like monks and novices. If one can obtain the vows of a lay follower merely by vowing to take refuge, then why does one take the vows of a lay follower after taking refuge? Therefore, in detail, "even if one obtains the vows," monks obtain the vows through requests and fundamental actions, and novices also say, "I am named so-and-so, the Blessed One, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened Buddha Shakyamuni, the king of the Shakyas, I follow him to become a monk, abandoning the characteristics of a householder, and taking the characteristics of a monk, please, Blessed One, take good care of me as a novice." Having said this two or three times, one can obtain the vows through such a vow.

Just as monks and novices who have already received vows are later made to uphold the precepts in order to understand them, so too is the layperson. 'Practicing one part' means guarding one precept. 'Guarding one side' means guarding two or three precepts. 'Practicing mostly' means guarding four precepts. 'Practicing completely' means guarding all five precepts. The word in the sutra, 'It is not so,' refers to the words of the Great Name Sutra. Because one does not wish to say from there, 'Please accept me as a layperson, from now until death, I will abandon killing.' 'Showing the nature of a layperson from there' means from the Great Name Sutra. Therefore, one cannot obtain the layperson's vows merely by this statement, because it is not stated in the Great Name Sutra. 'Through knowing and faith' means the meaning of arising from knowing and faith. 'If it does not arise from anywhere' means from the Great Name Sutra or elsewhere. 'Who would utter this completely unclear meaning?' means not knowing whether it is abandoning life or abandoning killing. 'The request itself is also unreasonable' means the request from 'Venerable, with how much does one become a practitioner of one part of the layperson's vows?' to 'is a complete practice' is unreasonable. Because where the request is unreasonable, how can the answer be reasonable? This 'Great Name' refers to a layperson who has abandoned killing and then returned to killing. Merely by this 'Great Name,' it is said to be practicing one part of the layperson's precepts, until abandoning the five precepts becomes a complete practice. 'Merely enduring that basis' refers to enduring from one precept to enduring all five precepts. 'The limbs are definite' refers to the five limbs, ten limbs, and all limbs. The teacher Gathers Good says, 'The Kashmiris also recite this Great Name Sutra. Reciting this does not contradict reason.' It is indeed what the Blessed One spoke. Those under the sun do not recite it.
